So, a lot of this stuff sounds, well, bad. I generally have had pretty good luck with cars but I'm definitely thinking twice about this one. Frankly, anyway, I'd prefer something smaller than an Explorer. So let me phrase the question in a different way: with $2000 to spend, what type of car would be a better option? The most important thing for me is that it can go through snow (Ithaca winters are a b****) and that it has a back seat that people can actually fit in (if you've ever tried to ride in the back of a Storm 2+2, you know what I'm talking about). I know, I know... why ask Texans about snow-driving capabilities? But anyway... Should I just hold out for a Subaru? Get a Civic with skinny tires? Thanks guys.

DoD's right on. We've had 2 Explorers. After the warranty wears out, which it certainly has on a '93, you'll get hammered (and we're not even second generation Americans )
Look for an older Maxima, early 90s maybe. Don't know if you can get it for that price. Personally, I'd buy a Nissan with 200K on it before I bought a Ford with 100K.
