The Galveston County Daily News reports Landry's Restaurants has told Galveston's city planning commission that it plans to replace the 225-room hotel in front of the city's historic seawall with an amusement park. The commission endorsed the plan to the City Council, which will have the final say. Landry's had bought the hurricane-mauled hotel in 2005 for $500,000. The hotel was built in 1965 on a pier built in 1943. Coincidentally, it replaced an amusement park damaged in 1962 by Hurricane Carla.
I can't even imagine the traffic...which is already awful for the Seawall...if an amusement park is built. My bet: No amusement park gets built there.
Wow, I was just there Saturday eating at the restaurant across the street after our car show at Moody Gardens and took a pic of my car in front of the Flagship. Good timing.
FYI on the seawall and anybody who wants to park there... They will start charging for parking on the Seawall sometime next year.. Probably 2nd qtr..
Crazy thing is in terrible condition tho It would be busy there 24/7 if there was an amusement park, would be pretty cool.
Good. The traffic was horrible on the seawall with everyone stopping and trying to parallel park into tiny spots. The horn was used quite a bit.
I'm glad they're keeping the pier structure- it's impossible to get another permit for something like that with real estate laws. As for traffic- there are back roads through the island.
Good riddance. This hotel was a joke the one time I stayed in the place. The elevators shook, the lobby was dirty, rooms were dirty, $100/night, front desk barely understood ENGLISH, no cable and $25 deposit to borrow a dollar store fishing rod... LONG OVERDUE.
Not as long as a republican is in office. I think we all should take a gamble on White. We could be cashing in on the benefits soon.
An amusement park I'm guessing similar to the Kemah Boardwalk could definitely help the Island and the businesses there. Sounds like a good idea.
