You can go tell that to the spurs.
The lakers won, 2 championships, 3 finals.

This is not a trade of equals. Lakers have won tons of championships in the past, they just got two more. Grizzlies never won a playoff game before, and now they are a contender or at least relavent. If we are talking about relative improvement, I would say Grizzlies got more out of this trade than the Lakers did.

The Lakers won 2 titles because of that trade. Clearly they were the winners.

What is really laughable is the fact that Pau, not Kobe, is seen as the lynchpin to the championships.

The grizzlies were never, ever going to have the success they currently have or had, as you will, with Pau Gasol. It is clear by the 0-12 in the playoffs with him. Without him, they've gotten to the western finals, went to two 2 rounds, and 1 7 game 1st round match.

The lakers, without pau gasol, would have still won a championship without making a deal at all. So clearly, the winner of the trade was the grizzlies, because they improved the most from the deal.

I wouldn't go as far as saying Grizzlies have won, but I completely agree with you on this one.

You are confusing what they got from the trade and subsequent improvements. They did some good (or perhaps just lucky) moves afterward. That does not make the trade a good one.

If you get $50 for $500, you are doing something dumb. The fact that you make another deal and get $500 for $50 does not make the first deal a smart one.

I agree with this. But Marc Gasol is now worth $600. That's the issue.

this is clearly a hindsight thread, so why are you positioning your opinion of the deal to when the deal was made. do you not understand the thread?

Eh, I think the Grizzlies could have still been this good with Pau. A team with Z-Bo, Conley, Allen around Pau would be pretty damn good.

And no, the Lakers would not have won the championship without Pau.

Houston - by not getting stuck with an aging Gasol and a declining rapidly Nene.

Oh, wait, you mean the OTHER Gasol trade.

    Nevermind.

Tell what to the Spurs? The number of teams who have won titles whilst not paying the tax is 0, that includes the Spurs paying a small amount in both their lux tax champ year seasons.

Lux tax payers 10 - non payers 0

If you're the Grizzlies, the only things that matter is Grizzlies or not Grizzlies, whether that not Grizzlies is the Lakers, Heat, Nets or Rockets is irrelevant.

The trade they made several months later would be better coined a terrible trade, but even that just be coined ****ty drafting.

Lakers got two championships where Gasol was right up there in talent level with Kobe, so yeah... I'd say LAL won regardless of whether Marc or Pau is better right now.

What have the Grizzlies been able to accomplish? Their window for getting to the finals was in the last 2 years, they have no chance now.

One team got 2 rings with 3 finals appearance and contention for titles every year.

The other hasn't even sniffed finals contention.

Huh? I was talking about hindsight. You apparently did not understand my analogy.

The logic is this. You are dumb getting $50 for $500, no matter how you use the $50 later. Why? If you did not do the dumb deal in the first place and still could do the smart deal later, you would have ended up with $950, instead of $500.
