In Feb 2008, the Pau Gasol trade was executed by the Lakers and Grizzlies. It was seen at the time as one of the most lopsided trades in NBA history. The Lakers proceeded to go to the NBA finals three times and winning two, with Pau Gasol as the main force in the paint. However, the emergence of Marc Gasol made the picture less clear. In the last three years, Marc Gasol led the Grizzlies to the playoffs three years in a row, reaching a conference final and a conference semi-final, a feat Pau was never able to achieve. In fact, Pau Gasol never won a playoff game in Memphis. Moreover, Marc became an all-star of his own and won the NBA DPOY in 2013. So five and half years later, who won this trade? Here are the trade details: Lakers got: Pau Gasol Grizzlies got: Marc Gasol Kwame Brown (later left in FA) Javaris Crittenton (traded in a three-teamer for a future conditional 1st rounder) Aaron McKie (released) Future pick (Donte Greene, traded to Houston for Darrell Arthur, who was traded to Denver for Kosta Koufos) Future pick (Greivis Vasquez, traded to NO for Quincy Pondexter)
The Grizzlies weren't going to win a title with Pau and aren't going to win with Marc, so if titles are the only goal, it's a wash for them. However, since they were looking to rebuild and did, one could say that the trade was successful in retrospect. The trade was a huge success for the Lakers because they won two titles largely due to Pau. It's unclear whether Marc would have come into his own on the Lakers (since he plays the same position as Bynum) and even if he did, his prime didn't overlap with Kobe's so a title would be very unlikely.
Marc Gasol turned out to be a star, which was something unimaginable. However, the addition of Pau Gasol helped the Lakers to become NBA Champions. That is why, I voted for the Lakers.
One thing your forgetting the expiring kwame contract allowed them to get zach randolph Pau for marc and randolph aint too shabby for the grizz
Memphis got the success they wanted, the Lakers got the success they wanted. Championships just isn't the goal in Memphis, or any team not willing to pay the tax
Lakers clearly got what they wanted. I'm not understanding why this is even worhy of a poll Maybe the poll should be: was Memphis raped by West as much as first thought I'd say Marc gasol redeemed the trade enough for it now to fall below the Morey rape of Presti
Don't extrapolate the trade to include Zach indirectly. Zach was traded straight up for Q-Rich. It had nothing to do with trading Kwame Please explain
One cannot only look at what the Grizzlies received from the Lakers in the Pau Gasol trade to determine how well Memphis made out. One must also look at the OPPORTUNITY COST of the trade. Memphis pulled the trigger WAYYY too quickly. Multiple GMs cried foul because they didn't even have the chance to outbid the Lakers for Pau. Many teams clearly could have. Large expiring salaries would be an inevitable component of ANY trade for Pau. If it wasn't Kwame's deal, it would just have been someone else's. As for Marc Gasol('s draft rights), no one could have possibly foreseen his ascendency to All-Star status. Hell, if the Griz honestly felt that highly of Marc, they could have flipped one of the first rounders they received in a (better) Pau trade to the Lakers for Marc's rights PLUS SOMETHING ELSE! The Lakers won that trade--and, more importantly, the Grizzlies LOST that trade--by every objective standard. Marc Gasol's dominance only helps Memphis save a little face in retrospect.
Irrelevant. Would the lakers have won 2 chips without Pau All you are trying to say is did Memphis get as raped as much as we first thought. What you are trying to say is maybe it should no longer be considered the worst trade in NBA history. Especially after Morey raped Presti
Eh, just because both teams technically improve doesn't mean that they both won the trade. It's possible for both teams to get better but for one team to end up with obviously superior results.
