My metabolism slowed significantly from 16 to 21 to 25. Of course, I'm what y'all would call a belligerent alcoholic.

About the Atkins, look, it's a quick fix and I already know that. I love carbs and protein, but I can't imagine eating strictly protein. I think, in the long run , it is unhealthy.

But, it works. My friends have lost alot of weight. But, if they are normal, they will incorportate carbs into their diets again and will be back to square one.

I think Atkins may be a quick fix for an event like a reunion or something like that.

Any diet that limits fruit is sketchy in my book.

Neither does staying on the bbs all day. :p

Hey, I'm not convinced Atkins is all bad. I know it works and it is good in alot of ways. My Mom was on it for a while and when she went in to get her blood work done....the doctors were amazed at how well her numbers came out. Some doctors even recommend it for quick weight loss and then switch to healthy eating.

Diets in general work while your on them but once your off is when you get in trouble. The Atkins diet was really designed for long-term...which they call maintenance. It allows you to incorporate more carbs back into the program. The first few weeks to month of Atkins you will see some dramatic weight loss. The first two weeks of Atkins calls for < 10 grams of carbs a day...quite a humbling feat. I lost 20 lbs in a month on Atkins.

There is no real proof to claim Atkins is bad for you other than the doctors who just throw out the eating all that meat is bad for your arteries and causes cancer jive. In fact, people on Atkins have excellent numbers on their blood tests....even on cholesterol.

In the end, I think a healthier eating habit and lifestyle with an hour of exercise a day is a better formula. Western diets suck so bad...only in America are there so many fast food restaraunts everywhere you turn. People eat out way too often. Portions are way to big. Therefore, people are way to big.

    Wanna know my theory?

I care about my health, I really do. I don't want to die from a heart attack at the age of 35 because I ate bad my entire life. However, I also don't want to be stuck eating crappy food that I can't stand for the rest of my life either. One of my great joys is eating and drinking. Not much more I love than a nice greasy cheeseburger and a pint. I don't want to give that up. It ain't living to me if you give up the things you love. Of course, my perspective will change when I have a wife and kids that want me to like be around and be able to, oh I don't know, run around with them without having to stop two minutes into it. I exercise (some), and I've been better with not drinking 8 cokes a day, eating and drinking more in moderation and the like, but I will never give up entirely the things I love.

Anyway, I've started 40 minutes on the bike. That normally burns around 300 calories. Slowly, I'm going to start adding weights to my workout.

Regardless, I'm probably gonna be 6'3", 230 for the rest of my life, and that's fine. (I'm hoping for 215 or so, but I may be fooling myself!)

I'm married to one. Eats fast food every single day of his life. If I'm around, expects me to come with him. (he won't accept "go get it and bring it back home and eat with me so I can eat something healthy") Exercises maybe twice a week (no strength training involved at all). Lives off red meat, french fries, and sugary drinks. Still skinny as a rail, even though he's almost 40.

Just wanted to let y'all know that I was skinny until I started going out with him. Ever since then, it's been back and forth, but never as good as it used to be. He's always been 20 pounds lighter than me, no matter what. Sigh...

Oh yes, just wanted to say that after spending time in this thread and the "fast food" one, I was inspired to go check and see if there were any aerobics classes about to start. There was, so I went.

At least for one day I did something right. Thank you cc.net. :)
