I can’t watch the game tonight and will be forced to listen on the radio. Man, it’s going to be different not hearing Geno and Jim. It just won’t be the same. Despite all his flaws, I will miss hearing “backing it in, backing it in, turning, faking, turning, faking, FOUL, no call, turning, faking, turning, faking…” all night long. I expect to have major withdrawals this season. It's the only negative about the upcoming season IMO. How sweet it won’t be.
I'm pretty sad that I didn't get to hear their last game together. I was too depressed to remember to turn on the radio to hear their last sign off. Sucks.
Here's the tribute they played after the last game last season: <div> <object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,0,0" width="210" height="25" id="mp3playerlightsmallv3" align="middle"> <param name="allowScriptAccess" value="sameDomain" /> <param name="movie" value="http://www.podbean.com/podcast-audio-video-blog-player/mp3playerlightsmallv3.swf?audioPath=http://rocketvengeance.podbean.com/medias/play/aHR0cDovL21lZGlhMi5wb2RiZWFuLmNvbS82MTAwOC91L1RyaWJ1dGVfd2l0aFNpZ25vZmYubXAz/Tribute_withSignoff.mp3&autoStart=no" /> <param name="quality" value="high" /><param name="bgcolor" value="#ffffff" /><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /> <embed src="http://www.podbean.com/podcast-audio-video-blog-player/mp3playerlightsmallv3.swf?audioPath=http://rocketvengeance.podbean.com/medias/play/aHR0cDovL21lZGlhMi5wb2RiZWFuLmNvbS82MTAwOC91L1RyaWJ1dGVfd2l0aFNpZ25vZmYubXAz/Tribute_withSignoff.mp3&autoStart=no" quality="high" width="210" height="25" name="mp3playerlightsmallv3" align="middle" allowScriptAccess="sameDomain" wmode="transparent" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" /></embed> </object> <br /><a style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; font-weight: normal; padding-left: 41px; color: #2DA274; text-decoration: none; border-bottom: none;" href="http://www.podbean.com">Powered by Podbean.com</a> </div> I'm really going to miss them. I can upload the final game if y'all want. I recorded their last 25 or so.
I started listening to Rockets radio broadcasts when I was a three-year-old baby boy on my dad's king size bed, rolling around, trying to understand why my father was so excited. "Back'nitin, Back'nitin, Dream Shake, Turn Around, 16-footer, IT'S GOOOOD" I've been a lifelong rocket fan, but when I went away to college, I chose to leave my television at home. I've learned to love life without a TV, and the last six years I have followed Rox bball almost exclusively through this board and radio broadcasts of Gene and Jim. For 22 years of my 25 year life, I have loyally listened to our broadcasts as the standard for basketball on the radio. We have four enormous shoes to fill at that booth. Gene, Jim, you will be missed.
It's going to be hard not hearing those guys on the radio. Those guys were just awesome.... I can tell you who I don't like and that's Mr. Hamilton for the Astros! Dude needs to take a hike.
Damnit, with all the excitement of the upcoming season and the new players we have, I had forgotten this season would be played sans Gene and Jim. Now I'm kind of depressed.
Living in Austin, I'm not up on these things...Why no Gene and Jim? Did they retire? Or did the Rockets retire them? Gene Peterson is my all-time favorite play-by-play guy. Foley ranks up there for color, too. That really sucks that they're gone. Who's replacing them.
just listened again " Rockets get the win in the dirtiest place i've ever seen. What in the world is wrong with those people" ha ha
thanks for reminding me Both gene and jim had that classic voice, the type of voice that you will only hear in 40's radio soaps. And it's not a voice that they teach you in radio broadcasting school, one has to be born with that voice.
they retired. 33 seasons together with the Rockets. Foley (69) was having health problems and missed the end of last season and the playoffs. Craig Ackerman replaced GP (67) and is on board as the p-b-p announcer this season. I don't know if they have an official replacement for Jim. it was a hell of a ride with the two of them at the helm. best wishes to them in their retirement, and best wishes to Ackerman in his new role with the Rockets organization. I was lucky enough to be in attendance at the Staples Center last year, the Rockets 6th to last regular season game. The media center was in the middle of our section, and I was able to walk right up to Gene and Craig and give Gene my thanks and appreciation.
