The only appeal for Nascar is the prerace festivities like tailgating for the NFL. I went to one race at Dover Downs because a buddy had free tickets. People show up days ahead of time and just party, party, party. Then the race begins they cheer after a few crashes and leave with about 100 laps to go.

I fell asleep. It was literally the most boring thing I have ever watched.

Oh and yes and rebel flags outnumbered non caucasians at least 100 to 1. In fact I don't recall seeing any non caucasians.....

So she shouldn't go to an event honoring soldiers even though she and Jill Biden are conducting a national campaign to help the families of soldiers?

Nascar fans don't care why you're there and it's very obvious that any Democrat is going to get booed at a Nascar event. If you didin't see that coming then you're the perfect candidate for an Obama advisor.

What's silly is that someone can't go to an event honoring soldiers because they are Democrats.

I don't think it's a problem that they booed her, and I respect her even more for going because she believed in the purpose of the event.

The problem is not hers for going. It's never wrong to support an event you believe in. If there is a problem it lies with those who can't handle her support.

Pretty much what FB said. If she doesn't go to events in certain regions it makes a mockery of a national campaign. Its why there was so much criticism about GW Bush cherry picking audiences. I put the blame on the people booing not on the advisers. I am sure some of them probably foresaw there would be some booing but decided it was more important to have the First Lady there to support that cause than worry about some booing.

This oddly worded sentence is so accurate, it's disturbing. And kind of humorous, in a cynical way.

I agree that if you know you're going to get booed and you go anyway because you support the group no matter what - then that's good. She did appear somewhat surprised though as if she didn't see that coming - but who knows.

But by the same token, this is one of America's basic principals - freedom. If you don't care for someone, then you have the freedom to boo them. That is part of what the soldiers fought for.

Actually, I think there's something good about a public figure going into to events attended by those who are not necessarily friendly to their political views (or that of their spouses). For example, Barack Obama has kudos from me for conducting interviews with Bill O'Reilly and there's something rather creepy about the likes of Palin and Cain ducking interviews (Katie Couric was apparently too tough for her) or complaining about "gotcha questions."

Many in the NASCAR crowd may not like the Obamas much, but they are still the President and First Lady of this country, which includes, among other things, NASCAR fans.
