Freaking awesome. I came to the BBS this morning JUST to post this.

The first ever images of a blackhole. Beautiful.

    First impression.

To be honest, I was expecting a grainy webcam image but a part of me was hoping for a Hollywood-esque black hole image instead. :p

It's a monumental achievement to even capture an image this clearly so credit to the experimenters that made this project happen.

I remember the team wanting to take an image of Sgr A*, the supermassive black hole in the center of our Milky Way galaxy, but it appears they're only sharing the images of M87. I wonder if that's because the data is still being processed, the image came out awful or I'm just misremembering. Another part of me was hoping this image would yield some new science that breaks our current understanding of physics. A little disappointed to see the image fits expectations under the predictions of GR.

I hate it when sequels rehash the original.

Perhaps a glimpse of the mind of God as the creator of the universe, yes.

Nearly all of the most important thinking in physics right now ends up on the event horizon of a black hole. It really seems like the key to a deeper understanding of how the universe works.

Some good all around info about M87. None of it has to do with the recent black hole news but it highlights what makes M87 so special among galaxies.

I am even more confident now there is liquor at the center. This many rocks, all different shapes and sizes, all headed to the same place, where there is no light, and everything is as best a blur once you get there. That's a bar. And that brings me to the phrase, "on the rocks."

A little bait and switch -- I thought we were going to see Sag A not M87 -- still cool hopefully they are still analyzing the Sag A data.

Looks like the pictures of Pluto from the 70s. Was expecting to see Maxamillian Schell's space ship.

    Or maybe... something else...

I think they did. It's just not as round and equally blurry.

The guy whose video you posted on April 9th just released his promised follow-up today, and it shows Sag A, and he explains why its image is not as cool.
