I feel like the Theis signing was a wash since we got back an expiring contract. It will be like it never happened in the 2022 season. The only real bad move by Stone was drafting Green IMO.
I'm not on board with #FIRESTONE, I'm even OK with the non-moves in the trade deadline, but still I agree - if you're the GM, you gotta get the picks right. That's what you get paid for. You have the whole scouting team. I'm not saying it's easy but you absolutely gotta get the picks right. He should've picked Mobley. Is it a fire-able offense? I'd argue no but I definitely understand the sentiment. Full disclosure - I wanted Green over Mobley. I thought Mobley persona wasn't impressive, he seemed passive, didn't think he had the it factor to dominate, whereas Green, I thought superstar was written all over him.
I was pretty frustrated yesterday and didn't post at all ..... I think it would have been nothing more than knee jerk on my part. Looking at the EG situation again, it really depends on what the offers were and what you think you can get at next years deadline. If teams were offering a pick in the coming draft that's 20 or worse, that pick really isn't very desirable for Stone. Having 3 picks in the coming draft is unfavorable and dilutes the value of the latter picks - teams know the Rockets don't want to add 3 more rookies to this roster. You can get that same pick in the next draft in the coming offseason or at the next deadline and that pick is a bit more desirable. Essentially Stone kicked the can down the road .... and that might be the best outcome. I am happy that they were able to fix the Daniel Theis mistake, he's not a bad player, he just doesn't fit here - they did have to cut Brooks to make that happen, but they can always resign him after clearing a roster spot.
He has not done a good job thus far, clearly. Willing to give him a couple years though, too early to fire him lol.
Even still I don't know why so many are deciding that Mobley > Green is 100% decided. They're rookies FFS playing different positions! If Green floundering (in part because the team has clogged talent around him) helps Houston get another top-3 pick who can end up being better than Green, Mobley or anyone else then that's a good thing long-term. There is no rush to trying to be on the mediocrity treadmill when it's better to develop talent that can lead to more consistent, bigger winning 3-5 years down the line. Building a consistent winner is hard in the NBA, in the Western Conference no less. If the team doesn't make great strides in the next year and a half then that's when it's fair to consider moving on from Stone (and/or Silas). For now it's bad by design. And for the record if Allen stayed with Houston, Green vs. Mobley likely wouldn't have even been an option as the that pick would've gone to Oklahoma City and Houston would be trying to build around Wood, Porter + Allen. No guarantee that Sengun would've even been made available. I like the position the Rockets are in now compared to the near-disaster of keeping Oladipo or giving that draft pick to Oklahoma City. Luck was on Houston's side, but that's part of the job.
