The movie was pretty good, but there were some things that bothered me. Spoiler It seemed as if Wedon was trying too hard to fit in a bunch of stuff that he had planned on introducing slowly over the next few seasons of the TV show. Namely the backstory behind River (which was primary to the movie...so at least it was given a pretty thorough review), the death of Wash (which happened so fast I felt cheated) and the death of Shepherd without fully explaining his whole background. The Wash death aggravated me because it smacked of a film executive somewhere sticking their hands into the project and demanding there be some emotional payoff or something. Just never felt right. But maybe it was all JW. Either way, I enjoyed the series 100x more than the movie, and I wish the movie had lived up to the expectations of the series because it would have given even further exposure to the show. I suppose I still hold out a tiny glimmer of hope that the show will get new life again someday, ala Family Guy.
Uh, have you ever watched Buffy (or even Angel)? Whedon is notorious for killing off characters left and right with little to no warning. It's his thing. BTW, Jaynetown was an awesome episode.
what is the intended order of episodes? i bought the DVDs, watch the "first" episode, or at least the first one listed on the box, which is not the first one aired, and it seemed kind of incoherent, like i was coming in mid-way through the story.
That's exactly what I was going to say, I think it's an unfair comparison mainly because BSG is much heavier in terms of dramatic weight and Firefly is more of an fun entertaiment type scifi
I got into Firefly via Serenity which my wife and I rented just because it was sci-fi and we'd heard good things about it. After enjoying the movie I learned about the series it came from and purchased the DVDs which we also enjoyed immensely. I don't really think you can compare BSG with Firefly. Way more drama in BSG as a whole although Firefly had it's moments.
The DVD shows the episodes in the order Whedon wanted them. Fox decided to show "The Train Job" instead of "Serenity Pts. 1 and 2" because the two-parter had too much plot and talking, not enough action.
Gorammit, you guys suck for bumping this thread. I totally got excited that maybe there'd be a new movie orrrr Sci Fi picked it up or SOMETHING... ANYTHING. Not just one more person to experience the eventual pain and loss, and then anger towards FOX with. I still remember finishing the Juble Early ep and realizing that was it. No more. 13 eps is a just not enough for such a magnificent ensemble cast. They'd be in, what, season 7? At least everyone seems to be in everything these days. Like Sam Jackson. "This is something the cap'n has to do himself." "No it's not!" Joss Whedon is a TV god.
Uh, no I haven't seen uh, Buffy or Angel. I was, uh, going off of Firefly which is the only thing by Whedon I have uh, seen. And in the series, uh, at least, he didn't kill off any of the characters uhnexpectedly.
I am with you... I am a HUGE Firefly fan but never watched Buffy or Angel. I was even able to avoid spoilers for the movie so everything was a total shock to me. The cool thing was the reactions of the audience around me during the theater release. It was really cool to hear the gasps of surprise all at the same time. Spoiler It was really neat when River says.. "Miranda" and I'm like... Joss loves me!
Loved the series.....Loved the Movie. For those that haven't seen Serenity in the theater, you may be interested in this: -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Houston screening will be held at the Alamo Drafthouse West Oaks on Sunday July 6th (in the West Oaks Mall, somewhere near the intersection of Westheimer and Hwy. 6). http://www.drafthouse.com/westoaks/ The event is not posted on their website, and they have not started selling tickets yet, unfortunately. It seems that they do not do this very far in advance, as nothing beyond May 21 is listed. In any event, I have an agreement for a 7:00pm start time, and I am guessing that the film will start at maybe 8:30 or so. My second and I have been posting to our board about some of the swag we have acquired for the auction, and our webmistress is working on setting up an area of our site for CSTS. Houston Browncoat website: http://www.natakuaya.com/firefly/website/houstonbrowncoats.htm If you register on the board, you can also find information on our regular shindigs. The next one is this Saturday, starting at 2pm, if you are interested.
I saw the movie first and I loved it. Now the repeats are on TV and I just don;t like the show as much. The movie had the cool killer guy with a sword. The movie had a hot girl mechanic talking about being horny. Had really cool expensive looking sets. (planet the reavers were born of) Was the introduction to the stories universe and had good story. (I luz zombies) The series is about some characters I am not really sure I like very much. After I saw the movie I almost bought the DVD;s but could not find in Best Buy. SO I gave it a more than fair shake.
That is understandable, not everyone is going to like the series. The series had several cool guys.. like Badger, Niska etc. In the series you actual got to hear her getting it on with the first Firefly mechanic. Check out the episode "Out of Gas" it's one of the best written episodes and gives you a bit of background into how it all started. The planet was called Miranda... and the set was a high school in California. Talking about cool sets. The entire set of Serenity (that would be the ship for thems wondering) was built on the lot. The two floors were on the same level but they could go seemlessly from one end of the ship to the other... In the movie the first sequence was shot in one long motion following Mal through the ship to introduce you to the characters... very cool for those of us that like that stuff. The only break was on the stairs when Simon is following Mal. Spoiler The reavers weren't zombies, they were drugged monsters who lived in polluted air and went bad instead of lying down to die. And the movie didn't introduce the universe.. the series did. In the opening dialog of each episode... Joss just had to catch everyone up in the movie.. hence the opening. Ummm.. this one confuses me. They are the same characters. In fact you get more about them in the series than you ever could in the movie. Joss did a good job with the limited amount of time that he had to get you to love them all, but you can't truly appreciate the characters unless you follow them from the beginning. I hope you will give it another chance sometime. It really is a lot of fun to watch.
for those of you who've followed it, a victory for freedom of speech, at the intersection of campus PC culture, and Firefly fans. <iframe width="853" height="480" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/4iAOtkpFGhc?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> and I can't believe there was a thread devoted to Firefly w/o a single Christina Hendricks pic. Spoiler fixed Spoiler
