Firefly is better... strictly from an entertainment stand point. It has a bit of all elements of genres... a little comedy, a little action, a little adventure, a little drama, etc.

I enjoy BSG, but it is a little less of most of those categories and more drama, though it was given more time and the characters were able to grow into their own more... which is something I would have love to have seen in Firefly.

I haven't seen the last season of BSG yet, so maybe someone else might be less biased.

I just asked a resident Sci-Fi nerd and he says Firefly is better than BSG.

Resident Sci-Fi Nerd on BSG : It starts out amazing, then it gets bad, then it floats at mediocre, then it gets good, then bad, and even all the bad bits are sprinkled with good episodes every now and again, but.. overall.. the series is just okay, and you have to watch it from the beginning

I haven't seen all of BSG but what I've seen I've liked better. I've watched most of Firefly and while I think it's good I haven't been that blown away by it, it's entertaining enough but after watching one episode I'm not really that interested in watching another to find out what happens next. I guess the fact that Firefly episodes are all mostly self contained stories and BSG ends pretty much every episode with some cliffhanger moment to keep you coming back. Plus the overall theme of the human race being attacked and trying to survive is more interesting to me.

Also, I've watched the first two seasons of Farscape and would rate that as better than both of them.

I haven't seen all of BSG, but if I liked it as much as I like Firefly...I would have.

I would like to once again echo my love for Firefly, as well as my sadness that we won't ever see anymore episodes. That was the kind of show that I would count down the days to the next episode...had I watched it when it was new. Instead, I got to see it after I already knew it was dead and cancelled, so each awesome episode after another was met by a kind of sadness knowing it would all end very soon.

As for characters...this was one of those rare shows where every single character brings something and every single one was cast perfectly. Mal and Jayne were my favorites, easily. I wish the show had run longer so they could have developed the Sheperd character better. The movie seems to insinuate that there was a LOT more going on with that guy than you realize, but they never really say what, if I remember (been a while since I have watched either the show or the movie).

And Kaylee was awesome. She's like the ridiculously adorable little sister that everyone falls in love with and that you badly want to protect from all harm...but you also kind of want to have sex with her.

    What?

If you check the wiki page... I believe they have made a comic that tells the story of Shepard Book that will be released sometime soon.

How can you possibly compare BSG and Firefly? Except for the fact that they both take place in outer space and have spaceships, they are completely different shows. That's like lumping Friends and CSI: NY together because they both take place in New York.

I thought Firefly was pretty good, but it was cut short so all the Joss Whedon payback you'd come to expect never had a chance to bear fruit. Serenity was a great effort, but who wouldn't want two more seasons than one movie?

I would compare BSG's style and pacing with Lost. It gets kinda frustrating dealing with the forced cliffhangers every episode. Firefly has that unmistakable Joss Whedon feel to it.

Too bad good space sci fi is slim pickings to even make a comparison.

I tried to get into Firefly, but it just didn't happen for me. I did enjoy the movie Serenity quite a bit though.

I'm surprised Firefly didn't really grab me, because I think Buffy is one of the most brilliant series ever broadcast on tv. Maybe I came to Firefly with my expectations too high?

Were you one of the ones who tried to watch it out of order on Fox? or were you first introduced to it on DVD?

Not sure if this has been mentioned elsewhere, but Firefly has been re-mastered in HD, and being broadcast on Saturday's 7pm cdt, and again at 11pm (same episode) on Universal HD. Check UHD's webpage for additional timings. They're into the fifth episode at this point, I believe.

I was disappointed a bit in the flick. Sure, it was entertaining, but I expected more from such a good series.

DVD. I think I only made it about 2/3 the way through the first season.

Well I only watched Firefly and Farscape, so I can't compare BSG, but I definitely agree that Farscape > Firefly. Of course it's kind of an unfair comparison since Farscape had 4 seasons and a mini-series to find the right tone, flesh out it's characters, and tell a complete story.

Firefly was fun and entertaining for the most part, but it never really had the time to build up the show's mythology. By the time the show really started getting good, it was already over.

That's surprising.. most people who saw it for the first time on DVD were much more impressed than those that tried to watch it on Fox.

I was one of the ones that watched the original run, but didn't realize how much I enjoyed it until I watched the DVD's. I loved the characters from when I was first introduced, but until I watched the episodes as they were intended on the DVD's I didn't fully appreciate the scope of the series and where it could have gone.

The fact that you liked the movie somewhat tells me you probably would have liked the episode Out of Gas and War Stories. I'm not sure if you would have made it to those only watching the first couple of disks.

If Firefly had more support from Fox originally I have no doubt it would have developed a viewer base to sustain it for several seasons.

Farscape is the shiznit. Great characters, great acting, great stories, great villains (Scorpius may be the best villain in TV history), and great dialogue. The entire show is extremely imaginative and well done. Very underrated show, IMO.

    And no, I'm not nomar.
