We should've gotten rid of Rudy and hired Phil Jackson, too, right? Or wasn't Phil the best coach back then?
CLOSE THIS THREAD! NOT SAYING I LIKE JVG, BUT HE OBVIOUSLY ISN'T GETTING FIRED ANYTIME SOON! NOW IF WE CHOKE AND MISS THE PLAYOFFS, LET THE SPECULATION BEGIN. UNTIL THEN, THIS THREAD IS A WASTE OF SPACE ON THE CF.NET HOMEPAGE!
I disagree, keep this thread and keep it in the frontpage until he brings us the championship. He probably reads this thread every now and then and gets motivated.
smart ? Prezident ? Clearly that is an oxymoron currently... Uplife Van Gundy to God like status......or some such what ever..this is a totally useless thread... change title to ...CD for President ! There, now we're happy ! yeah, JVG reads threads on this site..lol...you guys NEED to get alife !!
(please see "can we keep jvg and cd away from new york" thread for the earlier part of this discussion) (1) I am pointing out that Phil Jackson has no (obvious) primary allegiance. It is only "pointing out he's already won titles" inasmuch as he seems to be an NBA mercenary, with his decision on where he wants to be based upon winning championships. The track record cannot be questioned. (2) "After the fact assumptions?" Given the talent, Phil Jackson has lead a team to the finals ten times in Fourteen seasons, and lost *once*. There is a reason for that. If loyalty is removed from the equation, and you have a team "with that talent," I want a guy with that kind of track record leading it. Period. (3) I said *nothing* about JVG's talent, other than I'm certain he is coaching to its limits. I personally believe Phil Jackson has more talent/is better, but I'm not telling you to believe that way. You are the one who has this "ohh, somebody doesn't LUUUUV my guy" inferiority complex. (4) Sure, everybody tried their best last season, and the Pistons won. Maybe Phil Jackson was outcoached. Experience counts for a lot, and underdogs/dark horses sometimes win. That doesn't mean you should switch allegiances to the underdog. Despite the outcome of the first race, I would put my money on the rabbit over the tortoise the next hundred, thousand, or million times. (5) Please, STEP AWAY FROM THE JVG-colored glasses.
And my point is that JVG will build his own championship resume. The track record for Phil has been done. We know that. But that's not the issue. What's important is that JVG, our coach, will get the same chance that other coaches that have lead superstars ("with that talent"). This is the same type of lofty *rose-colored glasses* that gave Rudy his status. Wining a title tends to do that. It makes the coach seem bigger than they really are. In the end, you need the talent to win. It's not that easy to just go find a Jordan/Shaq/Duncan or Hakeem. He got the chance, and took advantage of it. Well, this time JVG has the super-stars to work with. And he will become a championship coach. You want Phil? Big deal! It wont matter. Regarding the Brown's win over Phil ("Maybe Phil Jackson was outcoached"). That's right. But that out-coaching doesn't come without a better team to lead.
Cheese-n-Crackers people.....let this freakin' thread die already. I'm beginning to think that edc is PJ agent or something the way he keeps pimpin' him on thie board.
First let me say I am only posting because this thread is up high again. I avoid posting when it drops down because I do believe it should be dead in spite of my personal dislike for the man. He is doing a decent enough job with the talent on hand. That being said, if you believe it doesn't matter if it's Phil or JVG or Rudy with these superstars a championship will be won, than can't we just get a coach that is a little more likeable.
OMR, Why can't we? Do you think a coach -- one that is doing a fine job -- is someone that you can just trade like a pair of jeans? It doesn't work like that. If they win, they stay. "More likable" is synonymous with winning. You could have JVG, Sloan, Brown or Phil and none of them would be warm-fuzzy-nice-guys like Rudy. All are disciplinarians; although each of them have their own quirks. I think the last thing we need is a softy again. Maybe that works with vet stars (that he knew a long time). But not with young stars. Right now the chemistry is great with JVG, TMac, Yao, Barry and Sura...just to name a few. And that chemistry is what is going to get us to that championship level. I think you need ask your question to Sura, TMac and Yao first. They like and respect JVG because they actually got to know him.
You never answered the Detroit question. Were they correct in dumping a coach who had just taken them to the Eastern Conference finals, amassed a 100-64 record over two seasons, and picked up a "Coach of the Year" award (Rick Carlisle) in favor of hiring Larry Brown? The championship says they made the right move. This is the same situation. No need to wait, or let JVG "build his resume" when the better guy, the guy who knows how to do it, is out there. Phil Jackson is that guy. Winning the title is all that matters, and he has proven he can do that.
edc, oh my God, dude! The Rockets are 8-2 in the last 10 games (undefeated when Sura is healthy) after starting out 6 and 11 and are playing the best basketball they have for years. LET IT GO! Are you a Rockets fan or not? If yes, then be happy. Don't say "I am, but we'd be better off with Phil or someone else." What has JVG done for us except guide the team to the playoffs, participate in personnel moves that make the team better, and coach them better then they have been for years. He has not failed, yet (and he wont). He is only making the Rockets better. So, if you'll kindly shut the hell up (sorry, don't want to start/perpetuate an arguement or cause bad blood on the board because I think I've been a pretty close to model poster), it would greatly satisfy us all. LET IT GO! No one cares what you think about JVG anymore because the rest of realize what a good job he's doing.
Simple solution, don't read the topic. I moved discussion from another thread to this one specifically to keep any talk about DavidS and his JVG-colored glasses (rose? No, I don't think so. More like sediment, but that's my perception) from anyone that didn't want to see them.
