He also fired the wrong ones he hired earlier. Stromm came in 2014 and he still remains his best hire overall, both in terms of impact and legacy. Would have to look back but I don't think there was that much minor league overhaul in terms of managers/coaching staffs as early as 2012. I do feel those developmental years (and the people in charge of those teams) are vastly underrated or not mentioned much when touting the strengths of systems.
I don't have any particular opinion on Alex Cora, and don't really care if he comes in to replace Espada-- so long as SOMEONE comes in to REPLACE him-- the sooner the better.
He is a drunk and he is an ******* --- but, he is very smart........ which isn't something we currently have. The Astros are 5-16 in their last 21 ........ that is a decent stretch of time, it ain't looking good.
I don’t see why not at this point, other than bad blood between Crane and Luhnow, which IMO is probably mostly bad blood coming from Crane. Everyone else involved in the scandal, other than Beltran(?) has been involved in baseball since it hit the fan back in 2019.
Yeah, what has he done since 2018 WS? Pretty much nothing. One hit wonder. I could probably think of 10 guys I’d rather see, starting with Lopez.
I'm not jadaed at all, I just want a win at all cost GM. Feelings be damned. MLB/Media got what they wanted. I would love to know some of the other things that were going on behind the scenes so I can make a decision on these things. He treated the media like crap because they treated him like crap during the rebuild and I kind of admire Luhnow because of this. Obviously you dont. They had 3 players that were MLB players in their system and Cosart who he used in trade to help build the team. Truth is he hit on the high draft picks, signed a bunch of Caribbean players on the cheap and made a bunch of shrewed trades. Unfortunately Dana isn't very good at this. Alvarez/Neyens/Frey etc.. are on the way. They're missing 2-3 top end pitching prospects IMHO. Do you trust Dana to lead this team to more championships? I dont.
Cora is a better manger than Espada, but I can’t imagine Crane would bring back someone that closely associated with the sign stealing. For anyone pointing out Correa is back, he was a 22 year old and not one of the coaches running the operation. There’s plenty of other capable managers.
Cora is probably one of the best in baseball at picking up on tells from pitcher’s who are tipping pitches. He’s willing to get in the video room and watch hours worth of film to find an advantage- but he needs a “lieutenant” type of vet in the locker room to help reach some of the younger players which is why Bregman was a perfect fit for the Red Sox. The young players loved him. Once Bregman left- that pretty much destroyed the relationships between the front office, the coaching staff, and the players. I don’t think Espada is a very smart manager although with all of the injuries and roster shuffling, it’s hard to tell. I think Cora would have the right mix of guys here(Correa, Altuve, Walker) to help create a better culture- but I’m not sure if Cora and Dana Brown would mix all that well. I fully expect that if things don’t turn around soon that Espada will be fired and Omar Lopez will be the interim manger and get a shot to finish the season.
Cora was a bench coach with the Astros for 1 year. Give me a ****ing break with the Lieutenant Bregman Redsox amazingness. He was there for (most of) 1 year.
My guess is that Correa is working extremely hard to try and make Espada successful and that Altuve would do the same for Lopez. I think Houston misses some of the leadership from Bregman but I also think they might really miss having a strong veteran pitcher in the clubhouse like they had with Verlander. Even when he was hurt I think he added a strong sense of resilience and stability that served as a good example for less established pitchers and I think it would be good to have a guy like him around for Burrows and Weiss to take notes from.
imma need detroit to lose some more games and they fire hinch, then astros go hire him demote or use dana through the draft then go beg jeff luhnow to rejoin the astros and get the band back together
The jaded-ness comes from not being able to accept that Luhnow is gone and not coming back (anywhere, ever). You’re also turning this into a re-hire Luhnow case vs. the fire whoever case that is actually being discussed. This team is not where the 2011 farm was or the 2000 farm was… and the Astros didn’t have Luhnow for either of those years either. I would take a 2001 turn-around (They’d need health, a Cam Smith superstar turn, and a young pitcher to pair with Spencer/Hunter that doesn’t get hurt).
Bregman was just an example for last year’s team. Cora took shots at the Boston front office for essentially trading and not re-signing their core players and handing him a roster of young prospects and telling him to figure it out. My point with Bregman was that Cora didn’t have a vet guy in the clubhouse for the young guys to follow and that rubbed him the wrong way. Simple as that.
