When did the previous regime take an OL as high in the draft as XSF? They take an OL high in the draft, then you rip them for not taking a QB. They try to increase cap flexibility by drafting a center high in the draft to replace their high-priced center, and you rip them for 'destroying the offensive line'.
Here come the Bill O'Brien leaks! (Which McNair said he didn't want anymore of). Trying to pin the blame on Osweiler for sucking and the ownership/Rick Smith for signing him. As if B'Ob has nothing to do with this mess. Sure. http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/tensions-spike-between-bill-obrien-and-brock-osweiler-in-houston/ Tensions spike between Bill O'Brien and Brock Osweiler in Houston The Texans offense has stalled and the honeymoon appears to be over in Houston by Jason La Canfora @JasonLaCanfora 13m ago • 1 min read Texans coach Bill O'Brien and starting quarterback Brock Osweiler had a heated exchange after a quarterbacks meeting this week, according to a source with knowledge of the situation, with pressure mounting on that offense to make strides. Osweiler has struggled early on after signing a new contract worth nearly $40 million guaranteed this offseason, and his play Sunday at Minnesota was particularly troubling. According to the source, Osweiler objected to some play-calling decisions during a routine meeting reviewing the Week 5 loss -- O'Brien took over play-calling duties a few weeks into the season -- and he and the head coach subsequently had a loud charged interaction after that meeting that did not go unnoticed by others. Numerous league sources have maintained that the impetus to sign Osweiler to a hefty free-agent contract after a brief stint as a starter in Denver began at the ownership/management level, a signing that ratcheted up expectations for the Texans and their offense after a blowout playoff loss last season. The Texans have scored just 75 points on offense this season -- second-worst in the NFL -- and Osweiler enters Week 6 with a woeful quarterback rating of 70.6, 31st in the NFL. With owner Bob McNair hopeful of a long playoff run in a year in which Houston is hosting the Super Bowl, and with the team also signing free-agent running back Lamar Miller and drafting receiver Will Fuller in the first round, the Texans know they need to make strides on offense, especially with star end J.J. Watt out for the season. The interactions between the coach and quarterback will be watched closely; a year ago, O'Brien benched starter Brian Hoyer after just three quarters of the opening game of the season. O'Brien expects much of his quarterbacks and is known to coach them hard, something Osweiler may have to adjust to. Texans officials downplay the significance of the incident between the coach and quarterback, attributing it to the kinds of things that occur in a season, but the episode was the source of chatter in the locker room as Houston prepared for a key Sunday night game, hosting the rival Colts with first place in the AFC South on the line.
Obrien's culpability in this mess is kicking the qb can down the road and not addressing the issue with any viable long term solutions thus forcing Smith's hand in free agency. Hopefully they can turn this thing around starting tonight.
Do you have info to the contrary? There was an article early on that said Rick Smith had to convince O'Brien that signing Brock was a good idea. Of course you know whose side the owner will take.
I'm leaning more towards firing BOB too, but it's hard to imagine any coach that would be thrilled with starting, or near-guarantee starting, a guy he had never had contact with before.
I might take back my "firing a coach mid-season is pointless" statement. If nothing else, it might promote a little positive culture change to put a high profile guy's head on a stick who has clearly underperformed.
This would be great. Rick is gonna try to say it's bad coaching. Bill is gonna try to say he didn't want Brock. Fire them both, make RAC interim coach, then get a brand new front office next year.
I'll say this... last night doesn't wipe out the 6 games in which the Texans' doors have been blown - but BO'B now has a definitive signature win. Hopefully, this will be the kind of win that galvanizes everybody.
Don't get too ahead of yourself. The Texans were 3+ point favorites and this is not the playoffs or a clincher. The comeback was great and once-in-a-few-years type material, but the team still played like dogcrap for 90% of the game (BOB's offense in particular, and especially the QB). I agree with REEKO on this one. If I had to place a bet, I'd bet this was a flash in the pan and this regime will crash and burn. But I'm happy as hell and enjoying the moment while I have it.
Reminds me a bit of the comeback after we got destroyed by Miami last year. Won 4 in a row after that including at Cincinnati.
