This scoop narrative is getting out of hand and it’s going to kill us all. Looking at leaderboards from past seasons it looks like the very best 1B scoop like 95% of throws and the very worst scoop like 80% of throws. The idea that Yuli is somehow unusual in his ability, as a major league 1B, to dig a ball out of the dirt is silly. If he is the best at it (and I have nothing that would tell me one way or another) the difference between best and worst is like 1 throw in 10 between a donkey and a magician. That’s maybe what 1 or 2 extra errors a month? That doesn’t make up for a 100 point gap in ops. And we don’t even know Yuli is particularly good as it. Of course we watch him and think he is. He scoops almost all the throws! So does every other MLB caliber 1B though.
