I think dyess is aging better than smith even if he is older...Smith's only advantage is FT%, Dyess has better FG%, stls, blocks, rebounds, he's also played a bigger role lately and you know he's still producing, but i'm not sure Smith would hold up if Yao were to go down again and he was called on to start consistently.
Trade for Devon Hardin from OKC. He is a smarter (4.0 GPA at Cal) and taller version of Joey Dorsey. His offense is limited to dunks and put backs, but at 6'11 he will block shots, defend pick and rolls, and work hard.
A high energy center to go with the 2nd unit. How about Mikki Moore? He does not have to score but play defense and get rebounds.
The rockets would be so lucky if they got a player like Mcdyess. You gotta think teams like the Spurs, Lakers and Denver are going to go after him in the offseason. I would hate to see the Spurs pick him up. His man to man defense is very good and midrange jumper is nails. Even at his age, he's definetly a Morey guy. Picking him up and getting a young athletic big to bring along slowly would really be awsome.
He was quite effective when he was with New Jersey and Sacramento. Not an offensive threat but one that does the same thing chuck hayes does but taller and with a better offensive game.
i dont think some of you realize the difference between our undersized Pf/centers and Dyess. Dyess is more chuck hayes than he is landry and scola, meaning that he's experienced at defending the post and being a traditional center who cleans up boards, defends, etc. Scola isn't that. He can be a great rebounder when he sets his mind to it, but his mindset isn't that from game to game because he's not a traditional center. Landry isn't agreat rebounder, just solid, and he too doesn't have that mindset, especially on D, when he oftens leave his man to try and get help side blocks, which he converts at a low % and end sup leaving the offensive glass open. Dyess isn't that way, he manages the post, secures, etc. Cleans up the boards. Again, similar to chuck, but Dyess actually has some offense. The guy averaged almost 10 boards a game in only 30 mins. In march alone he had rebounding totals of 17, 20, 22, 18, and 12 several times. He shoots high % shots, evident by his 50% shooting. He also basically took 3 seasons off earlier in his career because of injury, so although he's been in the league almost 14 years, he doesn't have tha much wear and tear and is healthy now.
I think Moore basically surprised everyone one for a year or two, he came out of nowhere, no one knew much about his play, now that teams are adjusting to him he's not that effective. It's not uncommon for some players to play very well after being given more minutes than ever before, thye're able to surprise for a while since no one is use to their game, and then they often just fade out again.
I would love to see the rockets get Mcdyess, but a ton of contending teams are going to go after him hard. He fits the rockets perfectly. I would think the rockets are going to have to give up most of their MLE to get him. Don't know if Morey or especially Les would do that.
i think he made 1 million this year, i dont think Dyess is going to be asking for more than that and that's more than a reasonable price for him. Plus we got the advantage of being his city of residence. At this stagee of his career he'd probably love to play at home, on a winning team, with a significant role, at least i hope.
This is like the 20th time I've seen someone suggest that the Rockets go after Nenad Krstic. In case people didn't know, he JUST signed a 3-year deal with the Thunder a few months ago. He's not a free agent.
oh yeah and the spurs got Gooden, i dont think he's a FA this year, so that's less room for Dyess, since they already have oberto and thomas (who both have another year left). /i dont see him staying in Detroit with how their season went south and doesn't look any better next year....Boston? Maybe, but they got their own innjury issues now and may be too far northeast considering he lives here
Gooden was waived by the Kings and signed on with the Spurs (presumably for the minimum) only for one playoff run. He's an unrestricted free agent. Oberto has a partial guarantee for next year, and the Spurs are looking to trade him (along with Bruce Bowen's partially guaranteed expiring contract) for another significant asset. If that fails, there is a good chance that Oberto is waived in order for the Spurs to avoid paying the luxury tax. Maybe he re-signs for less. Maybe he doesn't . . . . . . which brings up another interesting possibility. If Oberto is waived, he would be an interesting free agent target for the Rockets. He is an experienced center who plays some pretty decent defense (not great, but not bad either). He and Scola know each other well from playing on the Argentina national team, so the Rockets have a connection there. He wouldn't command a large salary, either. Something to think about.
oh ok, doesn't Gooden have a qualifying offer? Not sure what the terms of that are.....i was thinking of Oberto as well, but after this year, if he is waived though he'd definitely be worth a pick up if cheap.
No, Gooden has been in the league long enough to where he is no longer a restricted free agent for whom a qualifying offer may be made. He's purely unrestricted.
He made that after he was traded to I believe Denver in the Chauncey Billups trade, he was still making MLE salary after he was waived. He averaged 10.0 pts and 10 rebounds shooting 51% and you actually think that he'll sign for the veterans minumum and not get any MLE money. I find it hard to believe a double double guy in the NBA would take the league minumum, if he does his agent needs to be fired or the player likes to almost work for free.
From what i've heard/read about Mcdyess, he's not exactly the greedy type, i dont think it's unrealistic for him to accept the minimum to have a chance to play at home and finally settle down, plus he'd have a better shot at a ring here than with Detroit, San Antonio, and maybe even Boston.
The main reason why a vet like McDyess might choose another team are the injuries to Yao and McGrady.
