We met a crazy guy at a party one night in Hyde Park (Austin) - he was a neighbor that lived down the street. He talked us in to checking out an argon laser he built in his living room. Our friends all walked down there and he has this large laser set up in his living room -- it would burn your hand almost instantly and would light a cig in about 4 seconds. We used mirrors to shoot it off the cloud bank about 40,000 feet up. This was about 1994 so this nut was well ahead of the laser curve.
I don't think high-powered heat-producing lasers are new. Making them small and portable like this is.
Well people asked for a light saber, and this is as close as you're going to get currently, so what's the problem? Supply and demand.
Of course not - the laser the guy showed us took up his entire living room -- it looked like a particle accelerator .
This is false advertising. It's not a light saber in that a laser will come out and look like a sword. A laser will shoot out like 200 meters, making it just a bigger laser pen.
Kinda scary when you think about it. The scenarios they give are not implausible at all. Driving down the freeway and some punk 200 yards away is burning my retina.
That just sounds like you're describing a 200 meter long lightsaber to me. All the better for me to overcompensate with.
As long as you nerds only use them in nerd settings like Comic-Con or Internet gaming Cafes, and not in places were regular folks frequent, it'll be all good.
seriously? Something that can instantly blind someone and set fire to skin on contact from a far distance? And more importantly, has no stated use
Same here... I know something REALLY wrong will probably happen and i'll end up with seven fingers or something but dam they're cool.
