I'd say that's mostly true(cept the characters just being a "little" blocky). But for me, the story kinda fell apart after leaving Midgar, other than the sephy flashbacks and the town of Nibleheim(sp?). Still good, but nowhere near what it was. imo, the game itself has been surpassed several times already, even in it's own generation. But the greatest significance the game had on the console gaming world was how it reached a massive amount of people and raised the bar much higher for all developers. I dont know if that will ever be duplicated to the same degree ever again, as far as rpgs go.
Likely the very same way RC was talking about... fansubbed version. Bit Torrent. I believe it's called the "bien" release... there are like 2000 seeds right now, so it downloads quick. I know, boo for illegal downloads... but I'm definitely gonna buy it when it comes out here anyway... I should probably start a whole new thread about this, but get this... So I go into my local Gamestop back in Sacramento. I always chat with the owner... we're kinda good buddies. A few weeks ago, he told me that a Sony rep had been in recently, who had all but confirmed to him that yes, there will be a remake on the PS3. As has been noted, it wouldn't be hard to drum up interest, after all. Take it for what it's worth. This guy owns a game store, and I know him to be reliable. Of course, the Sony rep could have been talking out of his ass, but I don't know why he would BS a store owner about something like that. I'm not positive why, but that moment just never really did anything for me. Possibly because I barely ever used her in my party, so I didn't feel a lot of connection to her. Any number of moments in, say, Xenogears did a lot more to me emotionally.
Fantastic news! Thanks for the heads-up. That said, on the remake front, I would love to see 7 & 3 (5 in Japan?) remade on the next gen systems. Heck, if they did that, it might be enough for me to go out and buy one.
yep, i never played an rpg until FF VII came along. i used to think it was just stupid games where you had to read words on screen. just never got what the appeal was. then one day, i saw the game in my friend's room. asked to borrow of it. ended up playing that thing all day. took me about a month to finish it. i went on to buy FF VII and IX. sadly, i never finished either one. i guess the story just wasn't strong enough to hold my attention. i guess i needed some incentive like exacting revenge for slaying my "girlfriend."
First, I'm assuming that second time you say "FF VII" you actually mean FF VIII, since you say earlier you finished VII. Let me tell you, I've played every single FF game (not necessarily finished all of them, just played them)... and I didn't finish 8 or 9 either. They bored me, frankly, both for different reasons. Want a recommendation or two? Try Final Fantasy Tactics or Final Fantasy X. Those are both great... at least, I thought they were.
I've tried finishing FF8 twice and quit both times. I thought FF9 was and outstanding game, right up there with 7 and 10.
I did pretty much the same, although I did beat both games (paid full price for FF8, so I felt like I had to beat it). Even though I did beat them, they weren't my favorites in the series. Like you said, FFT and FFX would be great games to pick up; they're two of my favorites in the series, after FF3/6 and FF7.
Is FF IX the one where you play the water polo like game with the hawaiian like guy? I played that one for a coupel of hours but never could really get into it. I also played VIII and got bored with it fast.
my biggest gripe with RPGs is you can't skip the "movie" clips. sometimes those last for 10 min. plus. is it so hard to integrate that option?
Some RPG's let you skip the cutscenes, especially the newer ones. Hopefully, they keep doing that because I don't like that either. I hate going into some big boss fight that had a long cutscene, and when it gets to the battle, I realize I forgot to equip some item or something like that.
Hmmm... well... I just watched it, and I gotta say I disagree with you RC. Saying this is an average flick would be relatively kind, IMO, and I'm a HUGE fan of the game. Don't get me wrong, it had some awesome fanboy moments (that cellphone ring in the church had me smiling ear to ear), but the plot was just weak, plain and simple. After it's over, you feel like it was a half-hour long, because not a lot really seems to happen. Ultimately, the whole thing just comes off as an excuse to get the characters we know and love onscreen. Damn shame they couldn't have done something more with those characters.
The plot was partly why I said non-FF7 fans probably wouldn't like the game since it seemed to heavily carry from the game. I just saw it as a FF7 extension than a movie on its own, which it was supposed to be AFAIK. I guess if I had to pick the weakest part of the movie, that would be it, but I didn't think it was that important in this type of a movie. I thought maybe most fans would be OK with that, but maybe not. Everyone in the room (I'd say at least 25-30 people) loudly applauded the movie at the end, and I believe the movie had received similar responses at some of the film festivals. I saw some similar reactions to the movie on some other forums as well (although on closer inspection, there were some negative reviews as well). So basically, I didn't go in expecting a movie on the quality of Batman Begins or some AAA movie that cost $100+ million, especially since it started out as a 30 minute movie. I just wanted to see an extension of the game in movie form that brought back some of the great characters. I don't know. I guess this could be more of a love it or hate it kind of movie that I thought.
If I were the type to do so, then I'd be downloading now. Also, I always watch the cutscenes in an RPG during the first playthrough. Why am I playing a 40+hr RPG with tons of them if I'm not at least getting the story? The 'unskippable' really sucks because after that first playthrough, though, since I don't want to watch them again. (KH had this problem)
Don't you people know that Final Fantasy attained perfection in 1988 with FF2? All this 3D silliness is merely taking away from the greatest game in the series.
