Ok - time for comments Velvet Underground =w= Sonic Youth Buzzcocks Talking Heads =w= The Replacements =w= Radiohead The Pixies =w= Joy Division VU vs SY : Both very influential - velvets noise/folk/roll has aged a little better than sonics noise/rock/pop. It helps that Lou Reed could sing, in his way, and could really write a brilliant tune. Buzz vs Heads : Buzzcocks limited catalog can't stand up to diverse, influential work of the Heads. Also, Buzzcocks weren't even the best at what they did. Replacements vs. Radiohead - good matchup, but early Replacements (w/ Bob Stinson) just rocked off socks, together with enough atmospherics to grip. Radioheads soaring blur can't rock - not what they're trying to do, but ... hey. My personal favorite Replacements stuff is one-offs like Stinson's drunken amphetamine solo on "Run It" from Hootenanny. Pixies vs Joy Division - a blowout for Pixies. Sure, Joy Divison pioneered a sound, but... they weren't particularly astonishing with it. Pixies work is still amazing, even with age. Each song is an absolute gem, but still feels like it was kind of tossed together. Perfect alt product.
Here is an update thru Bob Marley's picks. Velvet Underground 16 Sonic Youth 2 Buzzcocks 5 Talking Heads 14 The Replacements 8 Radiohead 10 The Pixies 13 Joy Division 5 Will let this run thru late tonight.
