Deji: They weren't aimed at anyone in particular, but you make some good points. Understand, ID4 - like most cornball fun - isn't necessarily something that gets better with repeated viewing. When I was enjoying the ride, I didn't pay much attention to the details (since I had by then understood the movie's whole purpose). But when you go back and watch again, the luster dies down...and the details are more glaring. I found plenty more faults the other times I've seen it - but it shouldn't take away from the fact that it was just dumb fun to begin with. But I think the main difference for me is I don't care about the hype. The hoopla doesn't make a bit of difference to me at all. I've seen hyped stuff that was good and bad. And I've seen stuff that was ignored that was the same. I guess that's my point - I trust my own judgements, not how much hype a flick has been given. Or even how many other people went to see it. That's kind of what I mean about enjoying a movie for what it is. If you pay attention to the hype, you're much more likely to hate something simply because of the outside influence. (Which it seems a lot of people do).
I guess I've typed myself into the pretentious, condescending group that can't enjoy the mindless Summer flicks. Ah well, that's unfortunate. Unfortunate in the same way that any label is unfortunate. Amusing, of course, but unfortunate. The fact is, I get a kick out of quite a few of the "mindless Summer flicks". I just get frustrated with the sameness of it all. Doesn't mean I can't turn a blind eye to it if I feel the need, though. Unless the acting is bad. If the acting is blatantly awful, then the movie is beyond saving and I either leave or find a way to laugh at it. You all would probably be shocked to find out some of the movies I could watch over and over again.
For some reason, I am not even offended by the lowest common denominator nor the simpleton references made about me. I am generally not a shallow person in my views and knowledge in/of art, music, and film. I extensively appreciate a broad genre of all three. However. When it comes to films, most of the time, I want to kick back and disappear into the worlds they create. I want to "meet" the characters, check out the scenery, eat some popcorn, and enjoy myself. When I want to be entertained in a more cerebral fashion I use literature, art, and mostly, music. I get my mental massage from movies. And regarding the "just because you don't 'get' it" line...I usually do 'get' it I just don't 'like' it. Oh yeah, and just to be totally hypocritical I just thought of a, what is the technical term...oh yeah, artsy fartsy type of movie (at least by my definition) that I liked. Snatch. what a great flick.
Jesus Christ, Chance, have you been eating paint chips? I look forward to you opening a "Stroker Ace" appreciation thread!
