How do you feel the number of plot holes or convenience for story compares to Into Darkness and 2009? And when you say "I feel like they've dumbed it down a lot." Do you mean from other ST movies?
Same here. I have to admit that when I saw Justin Lin as the director along with the first trailer, my expectations were pretty low but this pleasantly surprised me. I thought the script by Simon Pegg was really good - a helluva lot better than Into Darkness. He managed to inject a bit of humor which I found refreshing. Yes there's a big plot hole around Idris Elba's role (who's clearly wasted here) but I have come to expect things like this especially in a universe where the normal laws of physics don't apply. The one thing that struck me was just how sanitized they depicted the huge loss of life that occurred when the Enterprise was destroyed (again) but again this was a PG-13 movie.
I liked it, but the story was really meh and didn't make much sense. Spoiler Idris crashes on a planet, with his friend Mantis (who may or may not have been a federation guy?), which has a drone army, capable of space flight, and life extending technology, feels abandoned, however could have left at any time with the ships? And somehow knows about an ancient super weapon, which Kirk just randomly has out of coincidence. The more I think about it from the perspective of the bad guy, the less I liked it.
Spoiler It wasn't super clean, but the fact that Krall well over 100 years old made it more believable. Krall, who is already bitter about the treaties, gets stranded for a few years on a planet and he feels no one is looking for him and grows a little bitter. He converts the drone mining fleet to a space fleet which takes a few years. In the mean time, the federation expands close enough where he establishes contact. By this time, he is not trying to get saved anymore. He wants it back to where it was.
Spoiler Yeah, I saw that immediately as well. How could he not remember he'd been the captain on the Franklin? After all that's how he got to that planet. And whatever happened to the rest of his crew? Did he suck out their lifeforce as well in order to extend his own? The whole story line about Krall was rushed and undeveloped because Lin packed most of the movie with one action scene after another which left little time for plot exposition.
Spoiler Only three survived. Him the girl and the second in command guy who fought Jaylah. As for the ship, it was broken, busted and inferior to the fleet he has. Why would he want it? It took a GOAT engineer to get it going even after years of work and scavenging from Jaylah.
Spoiler My main issue is that none of this is ever really explained in detail till the very very very last scenes in the movie. Some of his actions could have carried more weight had there been some clues to their motives.
I expected to like this more than I did. I plan on giving it another go at some point, but I wasn't impressed.
It took way to long to get the plot, which seemed to happen in the last 10 minutes. And even then I didn't feel it. I did like that the enterprise was taken apart piece by piece and the city was cool. And I did like the attempt to dial down the epic nature of the time travel movies, but think they ultimately failed compared to the first two, which were far more interesting, entertaining, and fun. I thought the cgi was very good. Quantity of humor was slightly too much, but ok. The side plot ( character development of Spok and Kirk ) never really connected with me. I'd give it a 7/10.
I feel like all 3 ST films have been mediocre. None of them have been poor but none of them have really been that great. Plot wise they are nothing to write home about. The cast + special affects have carried the franchise. This one is no different really. I didn't even know Idris Elba was the villain until the reveal at the end so he was wasted.
Saw it tonight and enjoyed it. Definitely different from the previous 2 but definitely better than into darkness. This felt way more just like an extended episode of TOS which is honestly what I wanted as a big fan of TOS. Star Trek just doesn't generally work as a movie imo, it has always worked way better as a tv show (none of the movies are fantastic, the original set included). However, the approach of treating this like a big episode was the right way to do it Imo
Just saw it. We really liked it. I'm considering it may be as good as or better than the new crew reboot film. The space scenes in 3D were incredible. Just the right pacing in dialogue and action for my tastes. I don't really have any complaints about this effort. Well worth the price of admission imo.gu
I liked it. But that may have been because I saw it on an outside IMAX with live orchestra, free food, and fireworks.
