For many, Neil Armstrong's first-step speech is sexist. Neil chose to say that it was a step for "man" and a giant leap for "mankind". We all know the more gender-sensitive terms are "person" and "peoplekind".

Within that mindset, when it comes the thread's namesake, Armstrong's flag planting was an act of pure nationalistic propaganda -- as if to say, yes we did built this. Moreover, it too may be sexists, as flagpoles are phallic in nature.

Including such a scene would have left out the achievements of the indigenous people of Andaman, the Javanese of Indonesia, and countless other cultures around the world, who by their mere existence, deserve as much credit as Americans for the first moon landing.

I for one am glad Hollywood is making these kinds of progressive decisions. After all, it is CURRENT YEAR, diversity is our strength, inserted-dubiously-vapid-platitude, etc.

It's a movie about how Stanley Kubrick shot the original movie about the fake moon landing.

To be historically and hysterically accurate, they need to show when the exhaust of the ascent engine knocked over the flag. Then with a WOMP WOMP soundtrack.

They didn't get a more permanent one planted until Apollo 12.

Seriously how mad would redstates be with the real story of our flag being knocked over b/c the astronauts didn't place it far enough from the lunar module? LOL

    Interesting opinion.
You cant change history - it is what it is.
    On a daily basis? Otay.
Btw, being wrong about history is not a crime - most of us have some wrong ideas or incorrect "facts" about it.

Not much outrage around this forum. No one pays attention to Hollywood and Ryno is gone. HAPPY.

In that case, saying it’s historically inaccurate is inaccurate.

Haven't seen the film, don't know anything about it. but ran across the following.

This author argues "Hollywood’s lies are forever. As time goes by, and fewer people remember the truthful version of events, their capacity to deceive probably grows rather than diminishing. “First Man” represents a more subtle deceit than “JFK” or “Truth,” but it is deceit nonetheless."

Seems telling that some people are more worried about the factual accuracy of a Hollywood movie than they are of the president of the United States...

Get ready.... Q4 2018 is tasked with being the quarter of culture wars. It’s going to get worse because that’s the only message they have to motivate their voter base.

I actually get why the director wouid think to leave it out given it is an internationally distributed film and he wants someone watching it from Australia or Hungary to feel the accomplishment of Armstrong as much as an American.

But I do think the director might have been able to find a way to include it that wasn’t Flag humping and wouldn’t make the global narrative that the movie is about American elitism.

Basically both the director and the people who will go crazy over this after watching a 30 minute segment on FoxNews about this, are all over thinking this.

Only I think the director had good intentions, and I know the right’s reasons are purely political.

Cool fact and funny. If this "outrage" is real and has or will spread (I have no idea if it has since I don't ever care to monitor these things), this would make for a good skit on SNL.

part of the outrage is that this was obviously deliberate
