That, and how come the missiles that shot down the craft the first time didn't shoot it down the 2nd time?

Just checked it out, pretty good movie. I can see the complaints yous guys said, but those thing didn't ruin the movie for me. I don't know if it was as good as I'd hoped, but it was good nonetheless. Also is it just me or did it have a vdeogame feel to it? The weapons, aliens and ending kind of reminded me of Resistance 2. I know the guy was slated to make a Halo film, but there were a few similarities to R2.

I thought about this, but I don't know how those 'pods' work. Do they reload automatically? Do they fire their missiles and they're spent? I was wondering.

I don't know, but it seemed that it had like 6 or 8 missiles on it, and it only shot 2 the first time. IIRC.

    Made me curious about it.

Well that missile turret needed an authorization to be fired. So I'm guessing that after the initial hit brought that ship down, considering the length of time between the two flights, somebody probably needed to give the go ahead to fire again. Since the special ops guy was just ripped to shreds, there was no one on the ground to give such command. That and everyone probably was frozen by the sight of the "mother" ship moving after 20 years.

Honestly I think some of ya'll are getting too picky with the details. There might be some unexplained things in the film, but I don't think any of them are plotholes that ruined the story.

Like how did they transport 2.5 million aliens from the ship to the ground? Or why didn't MNU confiscate all weaponry after rescuing them? For the latter I'd suspect they were trying to keep their real intentions a secret obviously, so they may have taken some weaponry, but let the Prawns keep most of their belongings under the condition that it wouldn't be used against humans. That way the public comes to understand it as a humanitarian operation instead of what it truly is..

As for the former. Maybe a giant escalator; who cares. The story is not about that.

How could any fan of sci-fi not love this film?!

just saw the movie. Very good.

And i find some of the "issues" people have with the movie to be pretty comical. Every movie has something you can knitpick at, but overall i thought this movie covered itself pretty well.

When you start arguing about how many missiles the turret did and didn't have and why they didn't shoot more...well, then you are just trying to find something to complain about.

Yeah I got tired of defending the logic behind a make believe story.

I loved the movie. I just happened to notice the missiles not being shot again because I was waiting for the main character to bust them up while in that robot suit.

    heh....

I get squeemish easily, but I didn't find this movie disgusting. I guess it helps that much of the gore is alien-related or
happens to those that deserved it
. The only part that I freaked out on was the
    finger-chopping scene

Finally saw this movie last night, and I've gotta say, I absolutely LOVED it. I thought that the whole premise of the movie was fantastic, and it was refreshing to see a movie with such advanced effects not get overshadowed BY the special effects themselves. If I had to choose one thing to change about the movie, it would be the backstory of the aliens themselves. I wish they went more into detail about WHY the aliens left their planet in the first place. From what I've gathered based on the trailers and things like that, it seems like they were refugees of some kind, and that the ship accidentally broke down over Johannesburg, but I wish they had given a little narrative on the history of the aliens. But overall, it was an incredible movie, and I thought the storyline was fantastic.

The fuel was not only for the little ship. It was to get the little ship to the mother ship, and for the mother ship to fly out of there. You can come to this conclusion when Christopher sees all the experiments on the Prawns and then tells Wikus that he can't fix him for 3 years now. He says "I must use ALL the fuel now, and travel back quickly." Clearly his original plan was to use some of that fuel to travel up to the mother ship, some more to fix Wikus, and then the rest of it to power the mother ship to fly back. This plan changed when he saw the experiments and wanted to use ALL the fuel to fly back quicker.

However the fuel powered the little ship as well, and that's why the boy was able to call the mother ship to pick them up after the missiles hit the little ship on it's way up. He couldn't call the mother ship before, because the little ship didn't have fuel to run all it's tech. It was the boy's backup plan after the little ship crashed.

Chris was probably starving, just like all the other prawns. Regardless, Chris didn't have the fuel necessary to power the mother ship to fly back. It took him 20 years to gather all that fuel. The ship didn't fix itself in 20 years. It just couldn't be used because of no fuel.

OK I know I'm late to the party on this one but I just finished watching this movie. All I can say is WOW and thank you hollywood for finally coming up with some original entertaining si-fi. I have not been this engrossed in a movie for a long long time. I can not wait for the sequel.

My team at work went to the movies today and I voted to see this but instead we saw The Informant. Would have rather seen this on the big screen.

I just saw the movie. I loved it. Compared to the other SF/action crap that I watched in the last couple of months (transformers 2, Terminator salvation and Gi Joe) it was brilliant. A new fresh look at aliens and their presence on earth. Especially brilliant that it played in South Africa.

It is good that some people do have new ideas, and do not need to trash old franchises like the movies I metioned above. I mean Transformers 2 was bad it was a bit better than transformers 1 and it had Petra and wadi rum in it. But even that couldn't save the movie. Terminator was also so bad, there was really no emotion in it at all. I didn't care about any of the characters. During Terminator I came to the conclusion that Christian Bale isn't that good of an actor, he doesn't show any emotion. Why do these type of action movies only care about the special effects and not about the story?

But to get back to this movie. It was very nicely done. It just felt refreshing (just like Cloverfield felt when I watched it). It is great to hear the African Accent. I was waiting for some people to start speaking Afrikaans.

I'm afraid what will happen if they want to make a sequel.

Bloomkamp seems so disheartened and frustrated by what happened with Halo, that I wouldn't be surprised to see him do films (and even a sequel to District 9) with a production company that gives him almost complete control over the creative process. In fact, his next film is following that exact route.

I wouldn't worry about that. George Lucas managed to take a revered trilogy and turn its story to complete crap while making bad actors out of Liam Neeson, Ewan MacGregor, and Sam Jackson.

In the case of Terminator Salvation, I also blame the director or whoever was in charge of it.
