It's still amazing that anybody was willing to vote for this. I realize Qatar spent a lot of money on votes but at some point even bribes shouldn't be able to make it seem like a good idea.
That is simply insane. Creating entire cities to host? In what dimension is this a good idea? Through my work, I know how FIFA is. I shouldn't be surprised...but this still amazes me. There is a small part of me that still thinks this cup will ultimately be played in the US. If by 2015, they've made no progress, I can see them pulling it from Qatar and moving it somewhere that already has the infrastructure (England or the US).
It still hurts my brain, but then it only serves to reinforce how greedy and corrupt FIFA is. For all of the lip service they pay to the game and "fair play," they blatantly took Qatari money at the expense of either player health (summer) or domestic league revenue (winter). They do not care about anything but their bank accounts, same as the IOC. If FIFA had wanted a streamlined, efficient and profitable World Cup, they would've chosen the US. For all the arguments about our size and difficulty of domestic travel, the cost wouldn't have an issue for people already able to afford going. Instead, they went for insane, off-the-record money. I agree with you, though, leroy; the US is a convenient fallback for 2022. Qatar has a ton of issues and a lot can happen to a single-product economy in 9 years. Not that human rights abuses have ever given bodies like FIFA or the IOC pause, but the drums will start to beat about migrant labor from India, Nepal, etc. in Qatar. Hell, they already have.
Workers described forced labour in 50C heat, employers who retain salaries for several months and passports making it impossible for them to leave and being denied free drinking water. The investigation found sickness is endemic among workers living in overcrowded and insanitary conditions and hunger has been reported. Thirty Nepalese construction workers took refuge in the their country's embassy and subsequently left the country, after they claimed they received no pay. The Indian ambassador in Qatar said 82 Indian workers died in the first five months of this year and 1,460 complained to the embassy about labour conditions and consular problems. More than 700 Indian workers died in Qatar between 2010 and 2012. http://www.theguardian.com/global-d...3/sep/26/qatar-world-cup-migrant-workers-dead I would bet serious money that the WC will not take place in Qatar, 2022 is a long way off.
It is a DESERT !!! Why are we trying to host a WC there? A DESERT is not a place for something like this. DD
I wonder what kind of team Qatar is going to field for the WC. Especially since they've never been close to qualifying for any WC ever. It's such an insult to all the other 150+ countries that actually play over the course of years to get the right to play in the WC finals. Even Kuwait and the UAE have gone to the WC finals. I hope they lose all their matches by 10+ goals just to make a mockery of their selection as host.
And they will be first seeded in their group. Can you imagine how happy a team will be they will be in the group of qatar and not with spain or germany.
Oh sorry I forgot about Mexico:grin: If it is not Germany and Spain, it can be Brazil, the Netherlands, Argentina, italy etc. every team a 1000 times better than Qatar.
Qatar is building the world's most f***able stadium. <embed style="display:block" src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:cms:video:thedailyshow.com:430666" width="288" height="247" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="window" allowFullscreen="true" flashvars="autoPlay=false" allowscriptaccess="always" allownetworking="all" bgcolor="#000000"></embed>
I don't think the quality of team should be a consieration for the host country of the World Cup. World Cup should be used to host the best sports event in the world and expand the game of soccer, either through players or fans (and most likely both). Maybe it takes a WC in that area of the world for them to really get competitive and be able to compete on the worlwide stage. South Africa is no world beater on the field but I think hosting the World Cup was a good idea and a prideful moment for the continent of Africa. Now, that being said, I do think the country should have the soccer federation/sports federation infastructure to be able to host such a massive event. I do not think Qatar will be ready to host and underestimated the efforts it takes.
Newsweek article on the Qatar World Cup and the shadiness (if anyone didn't already know) as well as the need for a re-vote. http://www.newsweek.com/soccer-punch-how-qatar-came-host-2022-world-cup-224033
US Extends Jürgen Klinsmann's Contract The USMNT locked up Klinsmann through the 2018 World Cup. I love this move - it'll give him time to see the vision for our national team through. Considering that Donovan, Dempsey, Howard, etc. will likely be finished on an international stage by 2018, this gives Jürgen time to groom the younger players to take over the reins.
FFS.. Valcke: 2022 World Cup Dates May Slide Back Several Months This is becoming a bigger and bigger joke. Now they're going to rearrange what would be at least 2 club seasons to try and fit a World Cup in over the holidays. Brillant move, FIFA...f***ing brilliant.
That's just Valcke. I think FIFA came out and said Valcke's comments on the topic didn't represent the thoughts of the organization. Either way, they are a joke and so is Valcke. They need to stop with the Qatar BS.
I still feel like something is going to happen between now and then and this Cup will end up being played in the US. It's the only place that won't require infrastructure improvements and is on a continent that's in line to host.
