I've always liked Aimee Mann(former lead singer of 'Til Tuesday). I also like the Cowboy Junkies, although they may not appeal to many on this board.
I'll let others name the newer artists since I don't really listen to newer music as much as I used to and don't really care for a lot of stuff newer than the 90's. I'm also not sure what kind of music you like, but I'm all over the place with my "likes". I also wasn't sure if you just wanted groups or would accept solo acts : 1 : Please have a sub when listening to this one. Don't listen to it on cheap headphones of nerdy pc speakers. And for the love God, crank it : Spoiler <iframe title="YouTube video player" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/M3T_xeoGES8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> 2 : From the Christine McVie era of Fleetwood Mac. One of my favorite songs EVAH : Spoiler <iframe title="YouTube video player" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/ThbMaq8hDEo" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> 3 : Stevie Nicks (also of Fleetwood Mac fame). Her voice is freaking angelic. Talk about tearing it up : Spoiler <iframe title="YouTube video player" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/m6kRXhyFllg" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> 6 : And then the original. Here's her "At Last". Check out her other stuff like "I Rather Go Blind" if you're into this - she's awesome on that one, too. : Spoiler <iframe title="YouTube video player" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/_Q2rZb7E0EY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> 7 : And I saved the best for last : Spoiler <iframe title="YouTube video player" width="640" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/CD2LRROpph0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Ok, I got tired, so ... some others I like : Lady Antebellum, Gladys Knight, Chaka Khan, Anita Baker, Roberta Flack, etc., etc. lol.
A little bit from both ends of the spectrum...I figure the second/third song is less likely to be your cup o' tea, but it can't hurt to listen. <object width="480" height="390"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/P3Ofj256SnM?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/P3Ofj256SnM?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="390"></embed></object> <object width="480" height="390"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/-yBw-MCGirs?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/-yBw-MCGirs?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="390"></embed></object> Original version of that same song... <object width="640" height="390"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/-d3RYW0YoEk?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/-d3RYW0YoEk?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="390"></embed></object>

Tracy Nelson. This is from a concert in 1987. I just wish she was playing with Mother Earth, a far better group, as she was when I first saw her, and them, 20 years before. She was slim and beautiful back then, and had more range, but Tracy can still belt out this song. <iframe title="YouTube video player" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/ThhOewiZWu8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
I've been listening to Flyleaf....they're actually a really good band, if you listen to alot of their stuff

Any song, any era? Not even remotely rock, but since someone else mentioned Etta James: Billie Holiday had the greatest voice ever. With whatever big (or little) band she had backing her. <iframe title="YouTube video player" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Z_1LfT1MvzI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> "Strange Fruit," especially given the subject matter, gets me every time. <iframe title="YouTube video player" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/bXdnD39GYVU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Her Louis Armstrong duets are also classics.
