First, you get some bicycles, and hook them up, if they want to play, they have to ride the stationary bicycles, to recharge their batteries.

Then they play, and will be too exhausted to chase those women around or complain about them wearing skimpy outfits.

Which, of course in that oppressive heat is necessary.

And due to the increase in scantily clad women walking around (because of the heat), tourism goes through the roof, allowing the government to build more schools and educate the ignorant masses.

And wallah...nothing more to blow themselves up over.

See, it is all about video games....

umad Hitler? Can you go one day without making a post about Muslims/Islam?

I know... I know... It's really difficult for a Nazi lover to go one day without displaying intolerance.

Its cultural, and its shameful, and just inexcusable, but you find that in some parts of the arab world, but you could go back to America and find that 50 years ago here even and that certainly wasn't 'islamic interpretation' here in the states, that was just a cultural value at the time and due to progressive feminist movement, thank god equal rights for the most part have come upto date.

Remember, to these pakistanis who justify not letting the women work, the prophet himself was married to a business woman who was successful, owned, land, independent, and older than him, women in islam owned land or were entitled to according to the quran before they were in great britian, but you see cultural and pre-islamic culture trickle down and although I do have roots and am proud of them in this country just like I am truly proud to be american, I am not happy in the current state with the government nor many of the affairs. truly is unfortunate. power to them who have to face scrutiny and keep up the work

    Which of his wives?

I mean when you have a bunch of them, surely you are going to have one that is a business woman...and pretty much every other occupation/role.

I may not agree with Islam, but I can admire any guy with more than one wife, that is HARD to handle.

If thats a hit on islam allowing multiple wives, once again, someone hasn't read the bible or many other religions, fact is these books were released within the contexts of their time, with intellect(another major focus point focused on the quran) you adjust or take it for what its worth, thats upto interpretation and the individuals, but in a literal level, the bible and quran are very similar, here are a few verses from the bible:

Exodus 21:10, a man can marry an infinite amount of women without any limits to how many he can marry.

Deuteronomy 21:15 "If a man has two wives, and he loves one but not the other, and both bear him sons...."

but then, I have heard the argument that this is the old testament, and jesus came and made right and updated new rules so that way it overrules the old testament, well Jesus(pbuh), what does he have to say about that:

Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law (the Old Testament) or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke or a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law (the Old Testament) until everything is accomplished. (Matthew 5:17-18)

Fact is all the scriptures and writings of all the old religions you will find interesting things that people will not agree with, its really the interpretations that are the trouble and many how people will take them to satisfy their own agenda, be it political, social, or whatever, what's sad is what you have here when you have these certain ignorant folks who don't understand the complexity of, well, people itself, no individuals, be them black, white, christians, muslims, rich, poor, whatever categories you can come up with are alike, as tempting as it is to generalize, it merely trying to simplify something complex in nature and the results, as history has shown, can be catastrophic amongst society.

Yea, definitely didn't do my context research and still haven't, so forgive me abut that, just went with what I assumed the tone to me, apologies if it wasn't mean to be like that, but that said the point is everyone likes to point the something more general or bigger like the race, or religion, for an individual or even a group of individuals actions, and when ATW or someone else sort of talks of islam in general being backward, hes not just talking about the article and people he is referring to(where in many of those cases, i am in agreement with him about those people) He is talking of myself and many other who have nothing to do with the extremists or whoever else.

I am just as muslim as them and my lifestyle, although not perfect is still within the context of the religion and I have my wrongs and rights and so do those guys, point is, pointing to this book, this religion, that says a bunch of things that are disregarded by these people which kind of takes away the point that that book/ideology is the issue, points it at the wrong people like myself and millions others. I think if you just point at these particular people, I and many others would agree with you, when you say islamists or muslims, even if they supposedly do it while chanting gods name, that not only dignifies there cause and believe that what they are doing is somewhat has some divine connection, but it connects me and others in that group too, but those particularly people, hell I will scrutinize and condemn them with you. This might be a more sensitive way of wording things and more effective in showing that its just generally wrong, not if you are muslim, christian, black white, red, a right wing, or left wing, but just generally wrong, smacking those labels on there like i said in my last post simplifies something complex and nature and then corners out people like myself who are not apart of those actions yet still in a group as a whole, but with no association or connection with them.

i am not sure I articulated it well in the flow(or lack there of) but hopefully I did, and hopefully its progressive, I think its a small start to bringing it together rather than creating more and more divisions.

I was attempting to be funny...I don't really care if any religion allows multiple wives....

By the way, Islam is not that old.....neither is Christianity.....if you are talking about the old religions, you might as well be talking about Egyptian gods, or the Greek or Roman gods....or Babylonian, or Summarian...now those are old religions.

Islam is actually one of the newest big ones...only about 1300 years old.

But still created during a time when most people were uneducated....and just copied other made up religions that went before ....

We should get back to scantily clad women, video games and tourism, which will fix this region !

Despite the annoying parts of the article, this seems to be great news IMO.

With all due respect to Pakistanis, the circumstances are leading many women in the country into secret prostitution, drug-abuse, and to become wives of horrendous people. I recently heard the mind-numbing story about how you can buy children in Pakistan, and how regional pedophiles are taking advantage of the situation - I don't know for sure that this is true, but I nearly threw up anyway.

All of that could be avoided if they are just allowed to progress like everyone else. The idiotic nature of these religious extremists shows a very disturbing pattern: that they are willing to adopt an attitude (women don't leave the house!!) where they have more control over their own woman/women, but they are fully aware that the overall group will see an increase in behavior considered immoral to every religious group including their own.

What they don't realize is that the control they are trying to establish will dwindle all the time, which is why they are trying to increase control. Where women used to work freely in the early Islamic periods, they don't anymore. Where the legal age of marriage started to increase, they are now trying to decrease it. Where covering your face was unusual, they are now trying to make it the norm. These are all consequences of an insecure male population who are control freaks and subconsciously (but not consciously) realize that the control is slipping away.

Obviously, this behavior is not unique to Pakistan, the Middle East, Islam, or anyone. It's also not specific to females being in the workforce - Iranian women are active participants in the labor market and politics, but are still dealing with the same types of issues. But this is a fantastic step, and one that I hope will compel the next female generation to think bigger, and compel the next generation of conservative males in Pakistan to reform themselves.

    s land balla,

Do you have any idea if the women are paid on par with the men?

    Again..

You can't say Islam is new >> that's inaccurate. It's the same message repeated in many religions, just through the eyes of different people.

I think what you mean to say is that the Quran is new. In that respect, yes, it is relatively new, and IMO it is much newer than 1300 years old. You could make a pretty rock-solid argument that it's no more than 600-700 years old IMO.

... Your opinion is kind of baseless here, especially since the Sana'a manuscripts and the Tashkent manuscripts are ~1,300 years old.

I'm curious why you believe the Qur'an was written sometime in the 14th century.

Nice article. This is how change happens as the economic impetus leads to societal reform.

I'm not sure, to be honest, but I highly doubt it. Then again, women aren't paid on par with men, on average, in the US either.

I'm not trying to justify it in any way. Not sure how much, if any, a female KFC employee's salary differs from a male worker though. Nevertheless, the bigger issue is the disparity in total number of female employees vs. male employees.

I did find this article surprising, though. The last time I was in Pakistan was 2007 (in Lahore...have never been to Karachi), and I noticed female employees in all sorts of places (stores, restaurants, ice cream parlors, etc). Maybe I just didn't observe a large enough sample. Sad, nonetheless.

From what my cousins there told me, jobs in KFC, McDonald's, Pizza Hut, Subway, etc. are highly sought after by the middle class in Pakistan. Makes sense, considering all of these establishments are sure to pay you and have air conditioning.
