I think I remember this. (I'll have to re-listen after work.) I recall my impression being Morey talking in general about what some teams do, but that it wasn't his plan. Didn't you get the impression that he was implying that's the easy way out; meaning, any GM could try that, and many are competing to be the worst -- it seems.

My impression of Morey is that he has a lot of pride. It goes against his money-ball philosophy to just dump salary for crap -- because anyone could do that. Hell, you and I could.

When I say McHale has more control over tanking (at this point), I am not saying it based on him being a bad coach or not; I'm talking about who he plays. If he gives TWill and Thabeet big minutes, he is not trying to win now, for sure. Morey, on the other hand, made trades last year that replaced vets with prospects. That would be his contribution to tanking. He can make more of those trades, but it seems he already tried on draft day. I don't see him just dumping Scola and/or Martin for crap.

Coaches generally aren't big on tanking especially one from the 80's Celtics, Morey though could decide that every niggling injury needs surgery and a long recovery time.

If Scola and K-Mart are unloaded for younger players and future picks then you know the Rockets are serious about rebuilding through the lottery.

    /crosses fingers

Something else, is there anything forbidding teams from already having deals in place, deals that could go down immediately once the season begins?

I would say, surely, since nothing bars them from talking after the trade deadline either, to set up draft day scenarios. You just can't talk to FAs. But what is odd is you'd think something would leak, if it was allowed and was being done.

Didn't the NFL execute several trades immediately upon signing a new deal.

I have a feeling the Rockets will get Iggy.

Sixers have got new ownership and a youthful core group.

    Holiday 21, Williams 25
    Turner 23, Meeks, 24
    Young 23, Nocioni
    Brand, Brackins 24
    Hawes 23, Speights 24
and whoever they drafted this year.

Brand and Nocioni's contracts expire after 2012-13 while Iggy's will be up a year later.

Didn't know where else to put this.

    ChrisMannixSI Chris Mannix
NBA executive texting about draft column: "This is the year to have multiple picks. About ten players who could go No. 1."

Lets hope the Knicks suck but not too much.

--Their own first rounder IF it is in the top 14 picks. Otherwise, the pick goes to New Jersey (from the Terrence Williams trade).

--New York's first rounder IF it is not in the top 5 picks (from the McGrady trade). Otherwise, they get the Knicks' top-5 protected pick in 2013.

--Minnesota's second rounder (from the Jonny Flynn trade).

--Their own second rounder IF it is in the top 40 picks. Otherwise, the pick goes to Detroit (from the Chase Budinger trade).

If the NHL scenario unfolds re: draft after a missed season then what would you project from this at that draft? Thanks...xiki...

And this is the number one reason that the Rockets should tank.

Topic: How the Rockets could get better quickly after the lockout ends?

Give Rick his pets and take back some picks and talent that has never been used properly from a team that has been in the high lottery for years and a GM that will lose his job if he doesn't win NOW. Rick already got one of his pets on draft night; now they may just may have an extra center to trade if the got back the player they want in return. Plus, they have draft small forwards like we do power forwards.

If and only if we sign C. Lee to a long term deal.

In: Darko Milicic, Wesley Johnson, Anthony Randloph and a first rounder or two

Out: Kevin Martin and Chase Budinger

T-Wolves - Their GM must win now or he is gone - picks do not matter to him at this point. They need a two and scoring in the worst way. These are R.A. pets and know HIS system and can help win NOW. (these two players have more value to the T-Wolves & R.A. than they do to Rockets going forward, IMO)

Rockets - YES!! we are giving a lot, but
    - Wesley Johnson is reason for the deal he is a superstar on the wrong team, playing in the wrong spot, for the wrong coaching staff. When/if R.A. gets a hold of this kid we will read about him daily. He is the answer to the small forward problem we have. 2012 Salary: $4,006,080 3 years remaining.
-Darko Milicic is a servicable two way player (we need a center so bad that D.M. is worth trading for - that hurt to say but it is true). 2012 Salary: $4,776,500 3 years remaining.
-Anthony Randloph is a wild card, much like our T.Williams, if he can "put all the pieces together" look out & if not he is in his last year of his contract no real loss. 2012 Salary: $2,911,231 1 year remaining.
-A first round pick or two helps even this trade up( we can use it/them to move up in the draft or just use it/them ourself )

The real reason we should get Iggy is because he is an ELITE wing defender, possibly the best in the NBA. He is also the PERFECT complement to Martin as his strengths are as a play maker and slasher as opposed to Martin's off ball game and shooting.

This is why it makes so much sense this year. The whole "well you're not guaranteed to get the 1st pick" is not applicable here. It's not a Tim Duncan draft. If we don't suck too badly, we can still very reasonable get, say, a #8 and a #16 from the Knicks. And because when you have a plethora of talent, teams are more willing to deal and position themselves for their guy. Which means we might get into the top 5 very reasonably without hardcore tanking.

Still don't think we're anywhere near a contender with "all offense, no defense" guys like K-Mart, Scola, Bud,...
We need to rebuild and trade valuable guys like K-Mart, Scola, Bud, Dragic and Hill.
The only players worth keeping are Lowry, Flynn(still think he's heavily underrated and triangle killed his career this far), Pat, Chuck, T-Will, Lee. These guys can defend, have athleticsm and have a hustle mentality(Jersey T-Will was a beast, watched many of his games).
I don't think there ever was a champion with two super wack defenders starting(K-Mart and Scola) or big liabilities coming off the bench(Bud, Hill, Dragic). And moving Scola to the bench is no solution, a 2nd lineup with Dragic, Bud, Hill and Scola would get killed by any offense in the league, it would be like the 104.1/104.0 Wizards or Warriors, you'll never win anything with them.

We should trade K-Mart, Scola, Dragic, Bud, Hill for decent 2nd tier stars like Iggy that would really contribute to our defense and could slash to the basket. Try to make a nice package for a C. Trade for young, promising guys instead of going the "win now" route that won'T work with our roster.

Tank the season to get a shot at Barnes, Jones, Rivers, Sullinger, this year's draft looks very promising and could get us a key player.

And the article is *bleep*, Lewis and Biedrins? Or Diop? Cap killers that don't bring anything to the table. Would set us back again for many years.
