Charlie Ward, Kurt Thomas are two other examples in his Knicks years. And correct me if I'm wrong, but there's this big Chinese guy Van Gundy and his staff have been working with over the last few years and I think he's turning out pretty good. What's that guy's name?

Van Gundy hasn't had that much young talent on many of his teams-- pretty much every young player/draft picks his teams traded away were worthless with their new teams, too (John Wallace, Boki Nachbar, etc). The Rockets also didn't have a 1st rounder in 03 AND in 04, so that further limits the potential for young talent on the squad.

However, when he does get someone worth developing, he's done a decent job of maximizing their potential.

Correct, I think JVG never had the luxury of a young person with potential and who is willing to work his a$$ off to be a better player, Camby and Yao met the requirement and they both turned out fine

people like Swift cannot be called "young" any more, so he shouldnt be used as an example

All of the above are excuses, make it happen. The top teams in our conference get done, why can't the rockets? Reason = Dawson.
