I think the question of cost isn't shumpert but as @The Cat and others have deliberated on, would they do it for a 1st round pick?

A first round seems pretty steep, but IMO assuming its lottery protects for multiple seasons... its a price the rockets should pay. Especially so IF Kawhi chooses the Raptors or Clippers.

My take here is that the 3 year deal is about bird rights on an ascending player in House.

Redick … great shooter but he got 12.9m per , the Rockets couldn't come close to that. 9.2 max. Dude wasn't walking away from money. He showed that the last time he was a FA and went to Philly over Houston on a 23m one year deal.

Sure maybe you get someone with that 9.2 but that costs you more than just the hard cap - You don't have House Bird rights after his 2 year deal is up and the rest of the roster is min deals.

Great point about the bird rights, I didn't even consider it and was under the impression the Rockets would have early bird rights under the BAE.

Regarding Redick, I don't know if he'd taken a 3 or 4 year offer (or if 4 year for Redick is even a good idea). IMO, not even exploring using the full NT MLE on players of that value at the start of Free Agency was a mistake.

Perhaps they did their due diligence prior to July 1st, perhaps they genuinely didn't like any of the FA's, anythings possible I guess. But I'd definitely be more willing to give the Rockets/Tilman the benefit of the doubt had they not approach free agency/the use of MLE similarly the previous year.

We're talkin about Daryl Morey here …. that dude always has his ducks in a row , I have no doubt that they did their due diligence on literally every potential acquisition.

Don't forget he also has Harden and CP3 in his ear on any potential addition.

Yes , the 2 year BAE would give them early bird rights which allows them to resign that player for up to the league average. But in that case you run the risk of losing that player if you cant pay him market value - the 3 year deal solves that with full bird.

I guarantee it right now. Wherever Iggy signs (assuming they are somewhat contenders), they will be the 2020 champs. Remember this post.

Trust that I'd be the last person to doubt Morey's competence. I'm sure Morey would've turned over every rock if he'd could. My question is: was he allowed to? Was the NT-MLE even an option for him? Using the NT-MLE would've assuredly put the Rockets into the Tax. Thus far IMO its reasonable to question if Tilman would've allowed him to do so with the MLE OR without acquiring a BIG name.

Re: House, I think the Rox did the right thing.

They didn't HAVE to do any of the things they did for him, but have treated him well to secure a valuable player for 3 years. They could have played extreme hardball from last season and seen what market forces did. But if you get a hometown boy who loves playing with James, is athletic on the wing with great size, make a sneaky agreement in advance and then lock it in as soon as FA opens.

If the Rockets were hedging on giving up a 1st rounder for Iggy in a trade, they should hedge no more.

Imagine Iggy signing with the Clippers after getting bought out.

Imagine the playoffs & the Rockets guards facing a lineup of Bev, Iggy, Kawhi & George.

Harden's going to be tired after halftime and CP3 might not even be able to bring the ball up past halfcourt.

After the Clippers just became the title favorites, we MUST pick up Iguodala. We need perimeter defenders.

To the surprise of NO ONE the Rockets fail at acquiring a player that they want.

Morey/Rockets are specialists in failure since 2018.

Speaking of the NT-MLE, Morris and Jam still out there. Cap space drying up!

I was on the fence but I'm in for Iggy now. We'll need the help to guard these LA teams. Just give them the pick Morey. Not like you keep them anyway.

I think its safe to say he could have spent the NT-MLE.

The way things look now they'll likely be deeper into the tax with further additions then they would have been simply using that NT-MLE / BAE. That capped them @ 139m. They are @ 131.5m now and were talking about adding two more players.

Signing Shumpert at 13.19 and the rest of the MLE (about 2.3) puts them at 147m and that's not counting any increased salary Shump would generate.

Now if they don't retain Shump ….
