I hate to rain on your rant, but, since you didn't notice, I am a proponent of recess / playground / intramural exercise in schools, particularly at the elementary level.

To go further on this, I asked you what you *specifically* disliked about the bill, and you said this:

When you tell American children what they can and can't eat, the next step is telling Americans what they can and can't say.

My point is simply that the government was already telling kids what they can and can't eat using federal dollars. If that's your problem with this bill, then your problem has nothing to do with this bill - it has to do with the system that was already in place.

Yes. I am far to the right of Reagan's and Obama's War on Drugs and other evil, big government nanny-state campaigns. Neoconservative statism is just as horrible as progressive statism. I'm glad we agree.

When you start equating an oatmeal cookie and a Rice Krispie treat to a Whiskey Sour and a pack of smokes, your argument loses some of its zing.

Sure diet has a good bit to do with diabetes and heart disease...but I would argue that our sedentary lifestyle has a lot to do with it too.

I agree with you on this. It's one thing for the federal gov't to create a program reaching out to parents and explaining how baked goods and sugary snacks lead to obesity and thus encourage them to speak to schools about it. It's one thing to educate kids about it. And teachers and officials and school boards.

But for the federal gov't to mandate it, is simply wrong and oversteps it's bounds as this should be a local issue.

The only exception would be if the FDA declared baked goods unsafe for children, and that is obviously not the case.

There are other and better ways to fight obesity.

Than again, sometimes even a failed and illconceived attempt can be beneficial. The publicity this receives may make many schools to reconsider their policies regardless of the law, which is a good thing.

I feel like Major and I must be on everyone's ignore list.

If you don't like having Federal guidelines, talk to Harry Truman about it. He's the one that signed the bill into law creating the National School Lunch Program. This latest bill doesn't change anything about the federal approach to nutrition in schools -- that's been around for decades. What you want is not blocking changes to the guidelines, it's repeal of the NSLP Act.

JV and Major, you're preaching to the choir for some of us...but we ignore you anyway.

Big brother is going to have to pry my cold dead fingers away from my brownie.

I sent a note to school with my kid today stating his doctor requires brownies, a Hershey bar, and potato chips for lunch. Every day.

Lol. I actually have the same problem at my kids' private school. One of the hyperattentive parents started giving the teacher a hard time about his practice of giving out 2 gummi bears to each kid in the afternoon, so he's had to stop. Now, because one kid has a loser parent, everyone must suffer. It's going to be hard on him in high school.
