Great article. Articulates the racial component careful and well thought way.

    Thanks for posting it.

Of all the people I know, there are only two of them who like and support President Obama. I know a lot of people. Of the hundreds of people I know who dislike him, not a single one of them dislikes him because of his race. It is all about his politics. I don't know of a single person who would not vote for an African American who shared their political views. Why can't people understand this. Did you guys dislike Bush because he was white???

How can you dislike Obama and like Mitt? I mean just as human beings. One is a cool dude and one is smarmy and uptight.

I disliked Bush because he was embarrassingly unqualified for anything but a glad-handing figurehead.

All the candidates from both parties are interested in one thing...getting elected and getting all the money being tossed around in Washington. It isn't about what is best for the country, and has not been for quite some time.

Even if a first time candidate is bright eyed and wanting to do right by the country, they are quickly lured by the cash when they get to Washington.

At this point, the capital is a cesspool. Huey Long would even be ashamed of our elected leaders and their endless greed.

To the article again, page 3 is perhaps my favorite. The passage on Shirley Sherrod (and she ends the article as well), is incredibly complex and powerful.

In sum, you get to review her lifetime of civil rights work, the death of her father, her being barred from voting as a young woman, on and on, until her infamous speech that was distorted by Breitbart(sp), and even clarified later, in full text, to mean the opposite of what Breitbart suggested (including by people like Glenn Beck, who rightly chastised the administration for firing her in a knee-jerk response to a crap-peddler.)

And then you get to read her take on Obama and her lame, inadequate phonecall with him.

    It has much larger meaning.

What an odd response, for anyone who read this entire piece. It must be a response to the title (which I think is a lame title for this long article and I even imagine it chosen by the editors.)

The article is really about what a black president means to the black community, in the long context of the history of that community in the US. It does not say white people hate Obama just "because of his race." There are a bunch of interesting academic studies cited about racial effects here and there, but it hardly amounts to the straw man you've posted.

SIDE NOTE: But to your other point, played out in thousands of other threads, nobody can point out his "political views" that rub them the long way. Beyond a few largely false and thread-base talking points (e.g. "he's raising taxes!" when the opposite has been true for 3+ years.) He's basically a black Bob Dole, an incredibly moderate and even conservative politician. But that conversation derails the thread.

At town hall meeting in Palm City, Florida on April 11, 2012, West was asked by a man in the audience: "What percentage of the American legislature do you think are card carrying Marxists or International Socialists?" West responded that he believed "there's about 78 to 81 members of the Democrat Party that are members of the Communist Party." When asked to name them, he replied "It's called the Congressional Progressive Caucus."[49]

I admit I didn't read the article because I think his race has so little to do with why people don't like Obama. The title did scare me off. I may take the time to read it later but it is time for church and I have a soccer game to coach this afternoon.

When I was a small child I heard a friends father can a black man the "N" word. I had no earthly idea it was anything bad so I repeated the word in front of my mother referring to someone I saw on TV. I NEVER got in so much trouble for anything I ever said in front of my mother. She went ballistic. She gave me a big lecture how we are ALL children of God and how skin color means absolutely nothing. Everyone is equal in God's eyes. That has stuck with me my entire life. I do not judge anyone based on their skin color.

Who were the last 3 presidents you voted for?

if you were to choose only 1, what do you hate or dislike or disapprove most about Obama?

    1) his policies
    2) his character
    3) his leadership

Let's just say by far my biggest thing I look at is if a politician supports the murder of babies. I also take Obama's original stance on gay marriage before he flip flopped for votes. I think Obamacare is a terrible bill. That fact that we are spending a TRILLION more than we are taking in EVERY year bothers me a little bit too. I do not like class warfare. I could go on .... but my wife and children are now finally ready to leave for church. Sigh we will be late again.

Thanks for the reply, and have a wonderful Sunday with your family! :) Won't go point by point with a response in this thread, but I'll just say I comprehend your position.

I was going to post that earlier - the Sherrod part is great. It is both personal and universal for anyone of her age group (and really their offspring as well because of how they were raised) and it is why there are still such complex racial issues today.

I am thinking the title was meant to be a "cute" play off of Fear of a Black Planet since it is one of the greatest albums ever. But I agree it doesn't really set the stage for the article. I do find it funny that people would be "scared off by it". White people are so touchy and sensitive (and...scared?) despite being the dominate race for thousands of years. Like the article states, it often seems black people aren't allowed to express any anger over anything. I experienced a ton of direct racism growing up but it never bothered me (other than wanting to be on the really good bball team!) because I understood the larger context. Oh well, it is such a burden to be so awesomely me.
