For reasons that have nothing to do with on-field play and everything to do with the injury -- which is what it all comes back to.

This whole soap opera is getting old. Get it over with and move on Favre. Who would be his receivers anyway?

What is the story with that? Are we sure it was off-the-field stuff? I hear it a lot, but pre-injury (granted, it was 3 games), the Bucs were 0-3 and Simms had a QB rating in the 40's, along with 1 TD and 7 INTs. In their first two games, the Bucs scored a total of 3 pts. He may have been getting close to getting yanked regardless, given Gruden's short leash.

Simms actually played well in the Carolina game, where he got hurt. His rating was still low, based on a low YPA, but given the situation (Carolina DL just abused Tampa all game), it was a good performance. Simms led them back late and rallied them from a big deficit to take the lead, but Carolina hit a long FG at the gun to take it. He had two terrible games to start the season, sure. But he also played very well (QB rating in the 80s) the season before, as well as a good outing in the playoffs. He wasn't going to get the heave-ho based on a couple of bad games.

Uncertain about his future, they signed Jeff Garcia that offseason -- but didn't initially commit to him as the starter. There was a lot of talk about letting Garcia and Simms battle it out, except Simms physically couldn't. From there...

Here's a column from one of TB's beat writers -- seems Simms isn't alone in questioning Gruden's character.

let me see, one guy was the last successful raider coach, and won a superbowl, the other guy has consistently underachieved, now who am i going to listen to on character issues.

look, i'm no gruden fan, and I still root for chris because he's a horn, but simms questioning gruden's character is just a little laughable. i'd say the same if vincent questioned jeff's

Simms has underachieved? He was the last pick in the third round, and by his third season, he was a starting quarterback (and a good one, at that) on a playoff team. He was still the leader of that team until he had his spleen knocked out and almost killed on the field. You expect more than that out of pick 97?

Of course, that's completely irrelevant, because what in the world does performance have to do with character? Bill Belichick is the arguably the greatest coach in NFL history, and he's a complete dick. Everyone knows it. Simms, for all his faults, has never been anything but a stand-up guy. Look at all the **** he dealt with at UT. He dealt with everything with complete class, and never made excuses. You can question a lot of things about Simms, but his character is top-notch. He's not a whiner or complainer, or someone who makes excuses.

And when it comes to Jon Gruden, there's a long list.

My point was that there's no precedent in his career for doing that, even though he would've had plenty of motivation at UT to do so. So it's unlikely he'd lie or exaggerate the situation. Here's more from last training camp:

Chris Simms sucks and Jon Gruden sucks. If Simms were a leader or any good, the Bucs wouldn't have any interest in Favre just like all the other teams the Packers contacted, they all said no thanks to Favre.
