Veggies...healthy subject. Anyway, veggies were my least favorite food item growing up. I've kept that perception through my 20s - early 40s. I just didn't like vegetables and to consider a favorite then...not going to happen...ever. Then I learned to juice...daily. There is not a veggie out there that I can't drink. Of course, I mix and match constantly and always juice an apple with the mix. Now, to answer the question: CARROTS!!!!!!!!!! If I had to pick only one vegetable to juice, it would be carrots for its abundant nutritional value. I'd like to add, in reference to another thread, APPLES would be my favorite fruit. Again, for it's incredable nutritional value. And to combine both...wow, killer drink...uh...very healthy drink RR
I see someone's been listening to the Juiceman! You're right, apple/carrot is a fantastic drink. I also break out my juicer every time I feel a cold coming on -- fresh pineapple juice every two hours usually knocks those germs out within a day.
Corn, potatoes, fried corn, baked potatoes with butter, cheese, chicken and bacon, carrots and potatoes in beef stew, french fries with chili and cheddar cheese are about the only vegetables I eat. B
LOL. Actually I got into juicing before I became aware of juicers being sold on TV. Cool on the pineapple juice JB. Periodically I'll juice a whole pineapple and then mix the juice with a banana in a blender.......kids love it! Another thought Mrs. JB, try juicing tomatoes and celery...the best drink on a hot summer day. RR ps. For anybody taking notes, vegetable juice has about a 4 day shelf life in the frig. Oxygen really breaks down the nutritional content. Apple juice last forever. I mention this because a cold juice is the easiest to drink.
The veggies I love to eat are the ones I grow in my backyard. summer: tomatoes (I've harvested over 130 so far this summer), cucumbers, eggplant, bell peppers, squash winter: lettuce, spinach, radishes, kale
I've had mine for several years and I'm quite happy with it. I think it's a really good juicer for someone who is just getting into juicing or someone who doesn't plan to be using it more than a couple times per day on average. They're reasonably priced and easy to use. If, after a while, you decide you have to upgrade, they have some stainless steel models that look like they could squeeze juice out of asphalt. The one kitchen appliance I did splurge on was my Vita-Mix. A recent issue of Cook's Illustrated called it "The King of Blenders." It's got a 2 horsepower motor and blades that rotate at 249 miles per hour. Not only does it make a fantastic smoothie (Starbucks uses them to make all their Frapps) but it can turn raw nuts into nut butter and grind wheat into flour. It was well worth the money.
Mrs. JB, You just reminded me to thank you for your recommendation of “ Cook’s Illustrated “ . You mentioned it a couple of months ago and I subscribed soon after. I must say, as a person who loves to cook, It is awesome ! Thanks !!!! S.J.
Thanks for the info on making juices. My brother is starting college next year and we're living together (we're like best friends). He really like smoothies and juices. He'd really enjoy some of thoes drinks. And now I can tell him how to make them and what combos are goo together! It might also help me. Part of why I don't eat many veggies is 1) it's summer and I'm lazy. 2) I forget about them down in the crisper (I know, that's sad)! Juicing them would be a good idea and a great and easy way for me to get my vitamins and daily veggie servings, especially if the shelf life is a few days! Thanks again for all the great tips! Keep them coming if you like. I know there's another fruit thread, but I wouldn't mind some fruit juice recipies posted on this one (as I haven't read the other one yet!)
Hey drapg, Try heading to BestJuicers.com . An excellent source on juicers. When you get there you'll realize there are many types of juicers. This list should scare you: Masticating, Centrifugal, Triturating. There is also a wide range of prices to consider. My dad has a Norwalk at about $2K. Of course he gets the best return on his juicing. Meaning, I can take my pulp to him and he'll still get another 6 oz of juice out of it. I presently have a centrifugal machine. That Norwalk has a freakin' press attached to it...and weighs about 60 lbs. A-train, "A little vodka and a dash of tabasco and worcestershire wouldn't be too bad, either..." Wow, I was even a bartender for 10 years and didn't catch that one. Princess (& anybody), My dad has a simple site on juicing that can help. http://www.geocities.com/juicinlou Mrs. JB, yeah, that vita-mix is a killer blender....just a little to expensive for my taste, especially since all I do is blend fruits. Happy Juicing All! RR ps. Btw, although I have a centrifugal machine, my next buy (within a month) will be the Green Power's triturating machine. Centrifugals are good for juicing a glass at a time. Since I get into production mode, I need something that can stand the heat of juicing for a couple of hours.
tomatoes: I know it is technicallly a fruit, but most people consider it a vegetable because it'sn so sweet. Strictly speaking, I can eat corn on the cob with just about any meal.
