I must admit that my fav type of music is Rock/Pop?Punk what ever that is. I just like a really cool song or an unforgettable hook and while I have a deep appreciation for say early Who (Pictures of Lily) and Kinks, Mott the Hoople and beyond with sidetrips to Joy Division and Wilco. I've found I most appreciate discovering new bands 'Alternative music' I suppose. I'm really liking a band from here in SD by name of Louis XIV. Just snotty MC5 meets White Stipes meets, welll, ya know. Thing is, their songs are really catchy and I think I'll go put on their 'Pink' EP right NOW!@!!
Hmmm... Orchestral/chamber/ensemble/solo (heavy emphasis on the Romantics, early 20th century, and the Russians, with a little dab of Baroque and Classical from time to time), opera, operetta, musical theater. Traditional jazz (including vocal), big band, some fusion and avant-garde. 20's-60's folk, bluegrass, blues, and Hawaiian blues. Indian/Pakistani, traditional Scottish, traditional French, French hip-hop (MC Solaar), French cabaret/jazz, N. African, Brazillian, Cuban. Oldies, Classic rock (general), 70's and early 80's punk (Pistols, Crass, Zounds!, Dead Kennedys, Thatcher on Acid). Old School hip-hop, east coast 80's-90's (Tribe, Roots, De La, Digable Planets, P.E.) 60's and 70's soul (Otis Redding, Aretha, Stevie...). 80's - early 90's metal. Misc. (Talking Heads (and Byrne's solo stuff), early 90's Primus, other stuff)
I'll listen to anything, but that doesn't mean i will like it. My favorites are Rock and Roll, punk up until 6 years ago, pop, anything brazilian, funk, classical, and R&B with a special fondness for 1970's soul(Spinners,Al Green,Commodores,Stevie Wonder,Aretha, etc.,etc.). I also tend to favor great songwriters since the words are just as important as the music (Elvis Costello,Paul Westerberg,Dylan,Joni Mitchell,Neil Finn,PJ Harvey). Oh and I love depressing songs
My favorite music is blues music. Blues music is real. It comes from the soul. There is no faking it. That's why I listen to it, play it live, and love it to the depths of my being. The best quote about blues music comes from Houston's own, the late great Albert Collins: "The easiest music to play is the hardest music to play right". Couldn't have said it better myself.
Reminds me of one of my favorite quotes from one of my favorite movies The Commitments. "Soul is the music people understand. Sure it's basic and it's simple. But it's something else 'cause, 'cause, 'cause it's honest, that's it. Its honest. There's no ****in' bull****. It sticks its neck out and says it straight from the heart. Sure there's a lot of different music you can get off on but soul is more than that. It takes you somewhere else. It grabs you by the balls and lifts you above the sh'ite."
Old Skool Hip HOp New Jack Swing/R&B [new and old] Rock and Roll Pop Fungus Music - u know .. that music that just grows on you . . .whether u like it or not [See: Matchbox 20] Rocket River I am generally slow to like new stuff . . It has to grow on me
mine is no secret..... old school heavy metal/hard rock is and has always been my first love.. /* Leave me alone don't want your promises no more 'Cause rock n' roll is my religion and my law Won't ever change, may think it's strange You can't kill rock n' roll it's here to stay */ but honestly....if the instrumentation is good...and it has guitar as a primary instrument with a good backbeat....then Im all for it! since I grew up also listening to funk/motown/old r&b...I do still have a fondness for it...to this day I cant not stop and listen to a Commodores song...or really, alot of others than are too numerous to name. a style I love almost as much as my first love is commercial(AOR) 70's rock...Journey, Styx, Foreigner, REO, Frampton, etc, etc... I have a passing affection for old jazz, bebop, swing... I love the metal/hard rock because of the power...the sound of a dual guitar attack with a strong rythym section gets my pulse racing like no other. The AOR stuff I enjoy not only for the good musicianship that is apparent in most of it, but the harmonies are sometime very enjoyable to listen to. Im tempted to go on...but most have probably already gone on to the next post...and I do have to get some work done... Good topic AB.
amen. Randy ranks in the top 3 of guitarists for me..he is the main reason why both of the Blizzard albums are the best Ozzy has ever done, and are in the running for top 5 of that era. Why do all the best guitarist die young? Its just freakin sad to lose so many before the do their best work. Randy SRV Jimi Cris Oliva RIP to all these fine guitarists.
honestly, there isn't much that I can't stand to listen to. I love rap/hip hop/ r&b - it's what I listen to a lot right now. Although 8 years ago, I didn't know what rap was... I just like the beats, and those key lyrics that just fit the music so well that you just have to listen to the song a couple more times to get it all in. I loved heavy metal for a while, and there's nothing wrong with wanting to listen to stuff that makes you nod your head in a completely different manner. Especially when you want to get energized for something. Country is good. But I stick to the early to mid-90's stuff. The stuff nowadays is too 'hybrid' for me.
My favorite is from George Carlin and goes something along the lines of: "White people have no right singing the blues. White people give (black folks) the blues." Preach it, brother Carlin.
The blues is great. I like my music to come from the soul as well. I like blues (including old acoustic country blues), gospel, real country (not Nashvegas), some rock, old R&B, funk, etc. What I don't like is: gangsta rap - I like some rap beats but am turned off by the lyrics. opera - those high pitched divas hurt my ears hard rock and heavy metal - liked it in my youth, but now it just seems like distracting noise. And grunge was just awful. FWIW - here's my local music picks for this week. Tonight - Blendt Friday - Malford Milligan (Cactus Moon in Humble) Saturday - Ruthie Foster (Houston Women's Festival) Sunday - Dukes of Houston (Zydeco Kitchen in Pearland). There's probably more good stuff out there this weekend, but that's enough for me.
Rap - The stuff that's been coming out today and for about the last 2-3 years. Nothing gets me going like some good rap. Ludacris, Chingy, and Lil Jon are among my favorites. It just doesn't get any better for me then a good sounding hip-hop song, it's that simple. Classic Rock - Rap is my favorite, but I'll always think the best music ever made was by Led Zeppelin. CCR, The Doors, and AC/DC are some of what I think are also the best. No explanation needed here really, these bands are just ledgendary. Grunge/Early 90's Bands - Stone Temple Pilots are my favorite band behind Led Zep, then Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, and Bush are all great. The music I grew up with. These bands have the best guitars and unique voices in my mind besides Led and the other classics.
Don't forget: Jump Blues Zydeco Rockabilly Texas Swing Big Band Soul (Chess as well as Motown) The bulk of what I have collected is Blues Rock and AOR types like John Hiatt, Steely Dan, Little Feat, Allman Brothers, Los Lobos,Jackson Browne, Clapton, SRV. I have loads of old Stones, Beatles, Zep, Who, CSN and Eagles but I bought em when they were new. It's AOR but you never hear it on the radio anymore, Why? I can go a little country if it's more rock like Dwight Yoakum. But pure Nashville, no. Wordy deep singer/songwriter, no. Screaming in angst rock, no.
2pac, Dave Matthews Band, Ben Harper, Jack Johnson.,O.A.R., David Gray, DMX, Travis, Guster, Counting Crows, Badly Drawn Boy, Outkast, Eminem, Pearl Jam, The Cure, Pete Yorn, Nappy Rotts, The Roots, Jurrasic 5, Tempus, Wilco, Ari Hest, The Smiths, Five for Fighting, Cat Stevens, Matt nathanson, Jump Little Children, and Tenacious D to name a lot. I think all of these artists exhibit what I like to call talent and therefore I like them.
