Definitely Supernatural and Sci-Fi. I really don't understand those Japanese horror flicks, I'm actually terrified of watching those...
Alan Ball (Six Feet Under) is working on a show for HBO based on the "Southern Vampire" series of novels. "True Blood" starts September 7 this year.
I did kind of enjoy the Blade series, but that was more Action than anything. Underworld is kind of in the same mold. I like some of those vampire movies.
I think Romero, like George Lucas, might be obsolete as anything but a money maker banking off past successes. The two newer Romero ones weren't nearly as good as the 28 Days Later movies. If today's audience has a shorter attention span, they were smart upping the ante making the zombies run and making the transformation time seconds instead of hours. It was so suspenseful but they still managed to keep the people's behavior honest and not just horror charactures. The zombies learning didn't do it for me, but I'll still go see any zombie movie anyone puts out (not directly to video- I've fallen into that trap too many times).
I appreciate the heads up! It sounds good already. I guess I like vampire movies in the same way I like sci-fi. I'm not as impressed with the ships and lasers as I am how people behave in different situations. Do they deserve to make it out alive, etc. Zombie movies are cool, bc the bad guys are really bad. There's no ambiguity. The intrigue comes from the human characters who always have to be fallible.
I like the horror movies that really scare the hell out of me. It usually entails some creepy, nightmarish imagery and there are some psychological horror aspects to it. Jacob's Ladder and Texas Chain Saw Massacre are some examples. There are some really scary Asian horror movies as well (The Ring and Audition come to mind). Typically supernatural in nature, but sometimes they just involve some messed up situations. I don't like movies with excessive torture or rape scenes in them, and I particularly have an aversion to any "horror movie" in which animals are hurt (e.g. Cannibal Holocaust).
I've learned to go old school - black and whites are the best! I quite enjoy Nosferatu. Both the 1922 and 1979 versions... Which, you should note (based on your social commentary post) that the 1922 version was anti-semitic propaganda and the 1979 was anti-homo propaganda. [History/Vampire lesson for the day.]
Things that make you go "Hm, good to know." It's odd to learn about anything relating vampires films and anti-homosexuality. The whole genre is full of homoments. Did you see Shadow of the Vampire with Willem Dafoe? I haven't seen Nosferatu, but Dafoe did such a great character impression. Johnny Depp-esque quality. After I saw it I spent some time in front of a mirror trying to make his faces. I act btw, so dont think I'm crazy.
I feel the exact same way. I like the ones with the disturbing imagery as well. Jacobs Ladder is the perfect example. A horror movie doesn’t do it’s job unless it gives me nightmares later on. I can’t seem to find anything that fits the bill. Any suggestions for my Netflix queue? I don’t like the torture movies either. Too insulting to me, relying on nothing but shock value. I need more than that.
I guess The Cell falls under psychological. Jacobs Ladder was great. Bram Stoker's Dracula with Keanu and Gary Oldman was great, guess it falls under supernatural. Stigmata was another good one.
psychological and supernatural.. can't think of a movie that brought these two together any better than "The Exorcist"...
