I have a chocolate lab who turns 8 in July. Great dog I would never trade him for anything. Extremely friendly around everyone and a great temperment (meaning I don't have to worry about hm biting anyone). He's easy to keep happy, just give him a ball and someone to throw it and he is in heaven. Additionally he runs with me every morning. Like mopst labe he got into trouble as a pup (liked to chew on everyhing) but since then he has been almost too easy to take care of).
Boston Terriers, what Matador said. Only bad thing is that their extremely curious (or at least mine was) so they might run away or get hit by a car.
yeah, never get a dog from a pet store, they are not treated well in the store and are often inbred (insert joke about the South here). my cousin bought a Samoan from a pet store, kind of an impulse buy, but it turns out the dog has a dozen diseases that make it difficult for it to eat, walk and breathe. its hind legs are not growing so the thing needs a hip transplant, and my cousin and aunt love it too much to not take care of it. poor thing. the dog was also overpriced. so anyone going to get a dog, always go to a breeder, and even at the breeder never get the first dog they show you, make sure you see quite a few before you make a decision.
My granny had at least 2 (maybe 3) Boston Terriers and they all ran away. Really sad. Oh and I second what nyquil said. Always buy from a responsible breeder.
never had a dog before..havent been around dogs much.. to tell you the truth i was petrified of dogs growing up.. but now i think i want one.. i just would like for it to be short haired, friendly, not too hyper, loyal, and not too big.. any ideas??.. also where would i get one.. dont know too much about this stuff.. and how much around you think it would cost??
Look at buying a book that talks about being a first-time dog owner. There are plenty of them out there. Also, if you know people who are dog owners, talk to them as their experience can prove to be invaluable. The cost depends on the breed of dog you get and if you buy from a reputable breeder. I paid $250 for Jake since he was a purebreed American Cocker with a pedigree and the breeder I got him from was a responsible one. Pet stores and puppy mills are the last places you want to buy a dog. Don't fall into the mindset of wanting to buy a dog cheaply; 9 times out of 10, you will wind up paying a lot more if you do this because you will have to go to the vet numerous times for shots and other preventive stuff. Pet stores and puppy mills are notorious for not having their dogs up-to-date on their shots, etc.
My favorite dogs are pound (or adopted) pups. They seem to know what you saved them from and tend to be extremely grateful. We currently have 2, 1 Australian Shepherd mix and one that has German Shepherd, Lab, Pit Bull, and Boxer. She may have more, but those are the traits we have identified.
We have three Dalmations (I'll post pics if my digital camera comes in today), and they are beautiful dogs. I was debating donating them to the fire department when we moved into our new home, but luckily, my friends at CC talked me out of it. I would really like an American Boxer, or a white German Shepard. Tara wants a beagle or a miniature Pinscher.
I've owned some cool dogs but now that I have a well trained German Shepard I'll never have any other type of dog again.
I could have sworn that you are not supposed to jog with dogs. I read an article about so many people a year kill their dogs because they jog with them (or pull a dog on a leash while the person rides a bike) because dogs are meant as sprinters with short bursts of energy, but long runs kill many dogs. Maybe this breed is different, but be very careful jogging with a dog.
