Some puzzling choices. 47 posts before this and only two posts mention Springsteen (TheFreak and Jeff) Only one post mentions Roy Orbison (good call Coma). No mentions of Santana. Bizarre. My list: Willie Bob Dylan Van Morrison Bruce BB King Honorables: Johnny Cash Jerry Jeff Bob Wills Roy Orbison Bonnie Raitt Hendrix Clapton Elvis Lightnin' Hopkins Sinatra Bob Marley Jimmy Cliff Santana Muddy Waters
1) David Bowie 2) Bob Dylan 3) Elvis Costello 4) James Brown 5) Johnny Cash How do you rank anybody above Bob Dylan, or James Brown? Very tough to sort out..I have had intense love affairs with all of these people. My current flame is Johnny Cash- one of those people that seem so elemental that you appreciate only after they are gone. People that also rule: Frank Sinatra, Van Morrison, Sly Stone, Prince, Iggy Pop, Hank Williams, Bjork, Patsy Cline
I made CBFC's list! Me dream's come true. Add Lou Reed, Patti Smith, Joe Jackson, David Bowie, Van Morrison and James Brown to my list. Kind of surprised no one's mentioned Joe Jackson yet. Great list, Rashmon.
Anybody that saw Joe Ely live during the early 80's would put him up there. (Am I the only fan on the board?)
You're right, he was really a band leader. But Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys didn't seem to fit in with the discussion in the "best bands" thread, so I squeezed him in here under the Rule of Convenience.
I wonder if Glen Danzig counts ... If a guy writes all the music and lyrics for his band, but the name of his band just isn't his name, is he a solo artist? By the same token, if a guy DOESN'T write a lot of his stuff (Elvis), is HE a solo artist? It seems like he's (or she's) just a singer in that case, performing under his (or her) own name ... I don't think any of these guys have been mentioned : (You bet your balls it's) Neil Diamond, Billy Squier, Sammy Hagar, Ted Nugent, Steve Miller ... I'd also throw out Ace Frehley, Meat Loaf, and Rick Springfield ...
