Shirley Manson (Garbage) She's just great. I put her way ahead of anyone else (in rock/alt). Plus, I really love Garbage - definitely one of my favorite bands. Then, I also like: Jewel Alanis Morissette Gwen Stefani (No Doubt version)
I agree she puts on a helluva show. Did you see she was the last second replacement for Sheryl Crow at the Rodeo? http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/3684444.html
than you should check out curve - especially their album doppleganger. garbage completely ripped off this less known band. in fact butch vig had been begging to produce them, but they had their own guy (alan moulder) so he formed garbage and found another u.k. singer who sounded just like toni halliday (curve). if you like shirley manson than give the real deal a listen...
I never really made a list: Chrissy Hynde Annie Lennox Cyndi Lauper Sinead O'Connor Belinda Carlisle Kate Pierson Nancy Wilson I cant believe guys actually like Apple, Alanis and Jewel. They are so bad it's pretty much comical. You might as well think Sheryl Crow is good.
This is one of those times when you're wrong. Well, mostly. In the spirit of brotherhood and to tell you the truth, Sheryl Crow blows.
I worked with this guy who likes Apple and he would play the cds all the time. I almost quit my job over it. It was pure torture. Just thinking about it makes me cringe. Atlantis's fake voice is a joke. She has you fooled. And Jewel sounds like Chewbacca when she sings.
Stevie Nicks, Donna Summers, Selena (RIP), Thalia, Dionne Warwick, Whitney Houston (pre Bobby Brown), Shirley Manson, Christina Aguilera, Jewel, Namie Amuro (Japanese hip-pop), Shirley Bassy (sang alot of the great 007 theme songs, such as, GOLDFINGERS, etc.), Celine Dion, Faith Hill, Kitche Nadal, Zsa Zsa Padilla, & Lani Misalucha ( the last 3 listed are Filipina singers).
Chrissie Hynde is far and away my favorite. Right behind her are Janis Joplin and Joni Mitchell. Also Patti Smith, Ricki Lee Jones, Joan Jett and even a little Ani DiFranco, Suzanne Vega and Michelle Shocked. Houston/Austin types: Carolyn Wonderland, Mo Kelly (Les Saucy Pants), Rebecca (Sincola), Diane Koistenen (de Schmog), that chick from Sexy Finger Champs, Jana Hunter (solo and Matty and Mossy).
And I can't believe someone who likes Sly and the Family Stone, Bad Brains, and Prince likes Belinda Carlisle AND Cyndi Lauper!! Easy though, just messin wit ya MEOWGI - different strokes for different folks. Apple appeals to me because of her jazzy sound; granted her voice is not the best, IMO, but I like how everything else is put together (her overall sound).
Not to worry. It's no good trying to understand Meowgi; one just goes along for the ride and bales every now and then BTW, can't believe I forgot Kim Shattuck of The Muffs. Try out Blonder and Blonder.
curve were touted as the next big thing in the uk. the jesus & mary chain with a female lead. my opinion is they wouldn't have gotten all that attention if the lead singer wasn't a hottie.
Thanks for the suggestion. I'll check 'em out; it's always great finding new bands (well, least ones new to you).
hey, it never hurts. its always nice to have something pretty to look at while enjoying the music. they were a great live band - i saw them everytime they came thru texas. to this day, one of the best shows ive seen was them at the vatican in 1992. they did have a "hit" video on 120 minutes for fait accompli, but i dont think that sound really had a chance of catching on in the states - a unique hybrid of industrial-dance shoegazing. garbage really took their aestetic and americanized it pretty well. as far as the garbage - curve comparison, there are few bands i can think of in the history of music who so blatantly stole another bands sound.
Well, I think Curve pretty much stole My Bloody Valentine's sound, so the point is moot. Anyway, if we're talking sound theft Little Richard and Chuck Berry might have something to argue about. Curve? Eh.... "Doppelganger" is a damn good album.
and mbv stole jesus and mary chain's sound. its all thievery i tells ya! its just that with garbage they seemed to take a single band and try to do exactly what they did. the fact that butch vig so openly campaigned to produce curve prior to forming garbage only makes the thievery that much more obvious. with curve, there were definately elements of the mbv sound and the larger shoegazing scene going on, but with all those drum machine beats they owed as much to the industrial and dance scenes too. oh yeah, and the singer was hot too!
