Public Enemy "Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos" I got a letter from the government The other day I opened and read it It said they were suckers They wanted me for their army or whatever Picture me given' a damn I said never Here is a land that never gave a damn About a brother like me and myself Because they never did I wasn't wit' it but just that very minute... It occured to me The suckers had authority
Truly some great poetry our children's children's children will be quoting for time immemorial. It's like a Shakespearean renaissance in here...
If what they say is ("Nothing is forever") Then what makes, Then what makes, Then what makes Then what makes, Then what makes LOOVVEEE? (Love exception) So why you, why you Why you, why you, why you are we so in denial When we are not happy heeeerrreeee... Y'all don't want me here you just wanna dance and I have to add this part Heeeyyy... Yaaaaaaa.. (OHH OH, don't want to meet yo' mama OHH OH) Heeyy Yaaaaaaaa.. (Just wan't to make you cumma OHH OH)
All these great lyrics posted in this thread just further prove how powerful and meaningful rap music can be...I still look forward to the day when when artists like Mos Def and Talib Kwali start topping the charts and become as mainstream as -- say -- 50 Cent.
Well, let's not get carried away. Sarcastic Shakespearean references aside, many of the lyrics quoted here won't get much play in future literature classes. Although "Hey, hey we want some p*ssy" has a pretty universal appeal.
There's the "party" side of Hip Hop, and there is the other side of it that's represented by the likes of Nas, Talib Kwali, Mos Def, Tupac, Kanye West, Common, among others...heck, even so-called 'gangster rappers' have songs that are meaningful and of some substance, going beyond the mere "I was getting some h***" trash getting air time on your local radio station. Much like the rock n roll era, there is plenty of socially conscious work out there to choose from, despite the presence of music/artists that glorify over-the-top materialistic desires, drugs, and everything else we deem as a 'social evil'. BTW, are you a hip hop fan?

Strange old Thread . . I wonder if there are any updates "Powerful IMPACT . . BOOM FROM THE CANNON" - Busta Rocket River
I think most avid hip hop fans are familiar with most of the classics. I think it would be a bit more challenging to try and find a catchy verse from a modern day artist; you don't want to reinforce the perception that substantive rap music is dead, do you?
I'll go a little unconventional here and quote Mr. "Raps Happy:" LOST When you a slave to the biz Wit no care for the cost of what you sayin to kids FOUND Is when ya lyrics are a test of time And your mom hears that your spirit is blessed, divine LOST Is when you rhyme til your throat gets sore But you don't even believe what you say no more FOUND Is when you bleed heart into the mic And the pain you sustain it can change a life LOST Is when you hide behind the freedom of speech While sure you're free to do it But what it mean to do it Did you mean to do it Did you need to do it Did you take time to think about the seeds you ruined FOUND Is ESCO, dead PREZ and them FOUND Is Lauren Hill FOUND Is Rakim FOUND Can be you if you felt the message and ask yourself this questioin [CHORUS] Why should I try to sound like ya'll sound That's what's wrong wit the rap game right now Why should I try to flow the way ya'll flow Or do a show like ya'll show Naw that ain't where my head at now Ya'll in the hip hop lost and found Man, that's wrong with the rap game right now It's like a circus wit a bunch of clowns Wit a bunch of clicks I'll probably rap circles around --Will Smith, "Lost and Found" 3rd Verse

Most underrated lyricist and hip-hop artists ever: DMX Just a few of his gems: DMX - "Look Thru my Eyes" For the same reason that fate, chose to give me away Take away hate, now I'm supposed to love the one that cursed me The one that wouldn't give me a cup of water when I was thirsty It was always his versus me, but now I gotta teach him Personal feelings put aside, cuz now I gotta reach him What I'd like to do is turn my head, like I don't know him But it seems like I've been called on to show him So I'ma show him And if you never met me, then you've no right to judge me I've got a good heart but this heart can get ugly DMX - "Let Me Fly" I sold my soul to the devil, and the price was cheap A yo it's cold on this level cause it's twice as deep But you don't hear me, ignorance is blisning and so on Sometimes it's better to be taught dumb Shall I go on You don't want no real, what the deal is a mystery How is it I can live and make history If you don't see it then it, wasn't ment for you to see If you wasn't born wit' it then, it wasn't ment for you to be But you can't blame me for not wantin' to be hound lock down in a cell wit' a soul gettin' dwelled This is hell, go get the devil and get me the key but can't be worst than the curse that was given ta me It's what I live for, you take away that and I'm gone There's a difference between, doin' wrong and being wrong and that ain't right Just keep it fair baby Put me in the year, and I'll take it there baby DMX - "The Convo" You tell me that there's love here. But to me it's blatant. Nothin' but all the blood here. I'm dealin with Satan. Plus with all the hatin' it's hard to keep peace. (uh huh) Thou shall not steal, but I will to eat. I tried doin' good, but good's not too good for me. Misunderstood, why you chose the hood for me. Mean I'm aiight, I just had to work hard at it. Went to gran'ma for answers, she told me that god had it. So now here I am, confused and full of questions. Am I born to lose, or is this just a lesson. And who it's goin' choose when it gets turned around. And will it be layin' in my own blood and on the ground. Put down the guns and write a new rhyme. You'll get it all in due time. You'll do fine. Just have faith cuz you mine. (uh huh) And when you shine it's goin' be a sight to behold. So don't fight to be old, or lose sight when it's cold. See that light down the road, it's goin' guide you there Two sets of footsteps, I was right beside you there. But what about them times I only saw one. Those were the times that I was under the gun, It was then I carried you my son. Led you to safety. It just wasn't your time to face me. (uh huh) Ayo a few of them times I thought you would erase me. But all you did was embrace me. Prepared me for the worst. Offered me eternal light, and scared me with the hearse. And the curse turned to grace. When the hurt turned to faith. No more runnin', (uh huh) and slidin' in the dirt cuz I'm safe.
