    Public Enemy
"Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos"

I got a letter from the government
    The other day
    I opened and read it
    It said they were suckers
They wanted me for their army or whatever
Picture me given' a damn I said never
Here is a land that never gave a damn
About a brother like me and myself
    Because they never did
I wasn't wit' it but just that very minute...
    It occured to me
    The suckers had authority

Truly some great poetry our children's children's children will be quoting for time immemorial.

It's like a Shakespearean renaissance in here...

All these great lyrics posted in this thread just further prove how powerful and meaningful rap music can be...I still look forward to the day when when artists like Mos Def and Talib Kwali start topping the charts and become as mainstream as -- say -- 50 Cent.

Well, let's not get carried away. Sarcastic Shakespearean references aside, many of the lyrics quoted here won't get much play in future literature classes.

Although "Hey, hey we want some p*ssy" has a pretty universal appeal.

There's the "party" side of Hip Hop, and there is the other side of it that's represented by the likes of Nas, Talib Kwali, Mos Def, Tupac, Kanye West, Common, among others...heck, even so-called 'gangster rappers' have songs that are meaningful and of some substance, going beyond the mere "I was getting some h***" trash getting air time on your local radio station.

Much like the rock n roll era, there is plenty of socially conscious work out there to choose from, despite the presence of music/artists that glorify over-the-top materialistic desires, drugs, and everything else we deem as a 'social evil'.

BTW, are you a hip hop fan?

I think most avid hip hop fans are familiar with most of the classics.

I think it would be a bit more challenging to try and find a catchy verse from a modern day artist; you don't want to reinforce the perception that substantive rap music is dead, do you? ;)

I'll go a little unconventional here and quote Mr. "Raps Happy:"

    LOST
When you a slave to the biz
Wit no care for the cost of what you sayin to kids
    FOUND
Is when ya lyrics are a test of time
And your mom hears that your spirit is blessed, divine
    LOST
Is when you rhyme til your throat gets sore
But you don't even believe what you say no more
    FOUND
Is when you bleed heart into the mic
And the pain you sustain it can change a life
    LOST
Is when you hide behind the freedom of speech
While sure you're free to do it
But what it mean to do it
Did you mean to do it
Did you need to do it
Did you take time to think about the seeds you ruined
FOUND Is ESCO, dead PREZ and them
    FOUND Is Lauren Hill
    FOUND Is Rakim
FOUND Can be you if you felt the message
    and ask yourself this questioin

    [CHORUS]

Why should I try to sound like ya'll sound
That's what's wrong wit the rap game right now
Why should I try to flow the way ya'll flow
Or do a show like ya'll show
Naw that ain't where my head at now
Ya'll in the hip hop lost and found
Man, that's wrong with the rap game right now
It's like a circus wit a bunch of clowns
    Wit a bunch of clicks
    I'll probably rap circles around

Most underrated lyricist and hip-hop artists ever: DMX

Just a few of his gems:

DMX - "Look Thru my Eyes"
For the same reason that fate, chose to give me away
Take away hate, now I'm supposed to love the one that cursed me
The one that wouldn't give me a cup of water when I was thirsty
It was always his versus me, but now I gotta teach him
Personal feelings put aside, cuz now I gotta reach him
What I'd like to do is turn my head, like I don't know him
But it seems like I've been called on to show him
    So I'ma show him
And if you never met me, then you've no right to judge me
I've got a good heart but this heart can get ugly

    DMX - "Let Me Fly"
I sold my soul to the devil, and the price was cheap
A yo it's cold on this level cause it's twice as deep
But you don't hear me, ignorance is blisning and so on
Sometimes it's better to be taught dumb
    Shall I go on
You don't want no real, what the deal is a mystery
How is it I can live and make history
If you don't see it then it, wasn't ment for you to see
If you wasn't born wit' it then, it wasn't ment for you to be
But you can't blame me for not wantin' to be hound
lock down in a cell wit' a soul gettin' dwelled
This is hell, go get the devil and get me the key
but can't be worst than the curse that was given ta me
It's what I live for, you take away that and I'm gone
There's a difference between, doin' wrong and being wrong
    and that ain't right
    Just keep it fair baby
Put me in the year, and I'll take it there baby

    DMX - "The Convo"
You tell me that there's love here.
    But to me it's blatant.
Nothin' but all the blood here.
    I'm dealin with Satan.
    Plus with all the hatin'
it's hard to keep peace. (uh huh)
    Thou shall not steal,
    but I will to eat.
    I tried doin' good, but
good's not too good for me.
    Misunderstood,
why you chose the hood for me.
    Mean I'm aiight,
I just had to work hard at it.
    Went to gran'ma for answers,
she told me that god had it.
    So now here I am,
    confused and full of questions.
    Am I born to lose,
or is this just a lesson.
    And who it's goin' choose
    when it gets turned around.
    And will it be
    layin' in my own blood
    and on the ground.

    Put down the guns
    and write a new rhyme.
You'll get it all in due time.
    You'll do fine.
    Just have faith
    cuz you mine. (uh huh)
    And when you shine
it's goin' be a sight to behold.
So don't fight to be old,
or lose sight when it's cold.
See that light down the road,
    it's goin' guide you there
    Two sets of footsteps,
I was right beside you there.

    But what about them times
    I only saw one.
Those were the times that I was
    under the gun,

It was then I carried you my son.
    Led you to safety.
It just wasn't your time to face me. (uh huh)

Ayo a few of them times I thought you would erase me.
But all you did was embrace me.
    Prepared me for the worst.
    Offered me eternal light,
and scared me with the hearse.
    And the curse
    turned to grace.
    When the hurt
    turned to faith.
    No more runnin', (uh huh)
    and slidin' in the dirt
    cuz I'm safe.

Z-ro is one of the ugliest people ever.

    All white boys love DMX.

and these are my 2 favorite Rap verses/quotes ever.

Starin' at the world through my rearview - Tupac Amaru Shakur

Staring at the world through my rearview
Just looking back at the world, from another level yaknowhatImean?
    Starin...
Multiple gunshots fill the block, the fun stops
*****z is callin cops, people shot, nobody stop
I wonder when the world stopped caring last night
Two kids shot while the whole block staring
I will never understand this society, first they try
to murder me, then they lie to me, product of a dying breed
All my homies trying weed, now the little baby's
crazed raised off Hennesey, tell me will my enemies
feed when they see me, believe me
Even Thugs gotta learn to take it easy, listen
Through the intermissions search your heart for a plan
and we turnin Bad Boys to grown men, it's on again
I give a holla to my *****z in the darkest corners
Roll a perfect blunt, and let me spark it for ya
One love from a thug ***** rollin with a posse
full of paranoid drug dealers, to the end my friend
I'm seein nuttin but my dreams comin true
While I'm starin at the world through my rearview (see)
    [repeat 2X]
(They got me) starin at the world through my rearview
Go on baby scream to God, he can't hear you
I can feel your heart beatin fast cause it's time to die (we)
Gettin high, watchin time fly, and all my mother****ers
Now I was raised as a young black male
In order to get paid, forced to make crack sales
Caught a ***** so they send me to these overpacked jails
In the cell, countin days in this livin black Hell, do you feel me?
Keys to ignition, use at your discretion
Roll with a twelve gauge pump for protection

*****z hate me in the section from years of chin checkin
Turn to Smith and Wesson war weapons
Heavenly Father I'm a soldier, I'm gettin hotter
cause the world's gettin colder, baby let me hold ya
Talk to my guns like they fly b****es
All you bustas best to run look at my b****es
Now I know the answers to the question, do dreams come true
Still starin at the world through my rearview

    (Spoken)
Hahahaha, you ain't knowin what we mean by starin through the rearview
So since you ain't knowin what we mean let me break down understandin
The world, the world is behind us
Once a mother****er get an understanding on the game
and what the levels and the rules of the game is
Then the world ain't no trick no more
The world is a game to be played
So now we lookin at the world, from like, behind us
*****z know what we gotta do, just gotta put our mind to it and do it
It's all about the papers, money rule the world
b****es make the world go round
Real *****z do they wanna do, b**** *****z do what they can't
Starin at the world through my rearview
Go on baby scream to God, he can't hear you
I can feel your heart beatin fast cause it's time to die
Gettin high, watchin time fly, ya know/and we'll be

It ain't hard to Tell - Nasir Jones

It ain't hard to tell, I excel, then prevail
The mic is contacted, I attract clientele
My mic check is life or death, breathin a sniper's death
I exhale the yellow smoke of buddha through righteous steps
Deep like The Shinin', sparkle like a diamond
Sneak a uzi on the island in my army jacket linin
Hit the Earth like a comet, invasion
Nas is like the Afrocentric Asian, half-man, half-amazin
Cause in my physical, I can express throuh song
Delete stress like Motrin, then extend strong
I drank Moet with Medusa, give her shotguns in hell
From the spliff that I lift and inhale, it ain't hard to tell

The buddha monk's in your trunk, turn the bass up
Nas, stories by Aesop, place your loot up, parties I shoot up
    Nas, I analyze, drop a jew-el
Inhale from the L, school a fool well, you feel it like braille
It ain't hard to tell, I kick the skill like Shaquille holds a pill
    Vocabulary spills I'm Ill
plus Matic, I freak beats slam it like Iron Shiek

Jam like a tech with correct techniques
So analyze me, surprise me, but can't magmatize me
Scannin while you're plannin ways to sabatoge me
I leave em froze like her-on in your nose
Nas'll rock well, it ain't hard to tell

This rhythmatic explosion, is what your frame of mind has chosen
I'll leave your brain stimulated, *****z is frozen
Speak with criminal slang, begin like a violin
End like Leviathan, it's deep well let me try again
Wisdom be leakin out my grapefruit troop
I dominate break loops, givin mics men-e-straul cycles
Street's disciple, I rock beats that's mega trifle
And groovy but smoother than moves by Villanova
You're still a soldier, I'm like Sly Stallone in Cobra
Packin like a rasta in the weed spot
    Vocals'll squeeze glocks, MC's eavesdropT
Though they need not to sneak
My poetry's deep, I never fell
Nas's raps should be locked in a cell
    It ain't hard to tell
