I agree. I tried it once after hearing soooo much hype about it, and it was, not even that good. I don't get it.
I tried it the other night, and I have to say, if you get the deal with a few mediums for 5.55 (two toppings, I think you have to order at least two), it is well worth it. Their new pizza is GOOD. At least I liked it. As did my co-workers. It's way better than Hot And Readys, which I don't mind for the value.
Quality of Papa John's varies dramatically depending on where you get it, from my experience. Brothers Pizza is really good, and I like Double Dave's too.
We've been getting Sarpino's near the Med Center lately. Easily the best chain imo. However I still prefer real homemade pizza
Papa John's is my favorite delivery pizza. I will say that it is difficult to beat the Pepperoni Rolls from Double Dave's though.
I got this deal the other week to try their new pizza. It was much better than the old pizza. I got the hand tossed. I noticed the cardboard underneath the pizza appeared to be pretty saturated. I gave the pizza crust the old pinch grease test and it had some grease but didn't seem overly greasy to me. I know they are using a new buttery crust with spices on it. From a commercial, I saw the guy brushing on some buttery concoction from what it looked like while prepping the pizza. The tomato sauce seemed to compliment the toppings well. I think they sweetened it a little and spiced it up a little. The cheese...wasn't too much of it...and they adjusted it to use I believe a mozarella/provolone blend. I thought the pineapple/ham toppings worked well with the new pizza. Overall, I didn't really have any complaints about it and would eat again. The crust did appear to be greasier than Papa Johns...which I previously liked the best of all three of the chains. I will try Dominos again in the future. One thing about how I like my pizza. For some reason, I like my pizza cold/refrigerated better than I like it fresh out of the oven. I am better able to ascertain the taste of spices when it is cold. I also like my grease solidified rather than runny. I think it settles better in my stomach. I do eat a few pieces hot and then it goes in the refrigerator where I eat it cold the rest of the way for later meals. I'm interested to know what others think of it.
Reading this thread again made me crave a pizza. So I ordered a large Papa John's "The Works" for only 10 bucks. Special deal right now. It's been a while since I had Papa John's or pizza in general so it's definitely hitting the spot. The garlic butter dip to dunk the crust in and the banana pepper that comes with it are so bomb.
I prefer Papa John's over any other pizza chain, but lately the one near my house has been shipping out some lackluster pizza. They have REALLY cut back on the dough and tossed a lot more grease on their pizzas. The past 4-5 times I've had one of their pizzas, it has been so soggy that the bread has torn apart before I could even get it inside my mouth. I wonder if they're trying to cut back on costs by cutting the ingredients. Has anyone else noticed this lately?
yea, i think across the board most chains are skimping on toppings. doesnt matter where i order i pizza from or if i ask for extra cheese or not. theres barely any cheese on them.
I just ate at Candelari's for their buffet 2 days in a row. Not as good as I remember, but beats Cici's any day.
Saying Calenderi's is better than Cici's is like saying that an Acura isn't a Ferrari, but is better than a Yugo.
I used to enjoy Godfather's when I was younger, but having moved to their headquarters city, Omaha, I've really lost any affinity for their pizza or completely half-assed operation. Their online ordering is horrific, and their sides are freaking dreadful. Their "Cheesy Bread" is basically dinner rolls with Kraft Slices on them. You get the sense that whatever success they have is from retaining the buffet and obsessive cost control. Papa John's impresses the heck out of me just because I remember assuming in the mid '90s that Pizza Hut was basically the Standard Oil of pizza. PJ's is the only chain that does online ordering everywhere. And their specialty pizzas are actual pizzas: not just pizza in different shapes with a Queen Latifah voiceover (The "Pizzallelogram!"). Little Caesar's just stopped trying at some point, but I would kill to see that "conga line" commercial from the early '90s.
