No love for Round Table? As far as chains go, that's my spot. Locally, I LOVE The Rock Pizza, but there are only like three or four locations and they're all in Washington state.
I was surprised that Mellow Mushroom was an option. I didn't know that was a chain. We have one here in Savannah. That's the one I chose.
I don't do national chain pizza joints. In Houston, close to my casa, I like Romano's (on West Gray) and I like the original Candelari's on Bissonet. Away from my casa, on the west side, Manhattan Pizza is pretty good. Now here's the kicker....I heard that Patsy Grimaldi's, the famous pizzeria under the Brooklyn Bridge, has slowly begun to franchise and that they will be opening one in First Colony Mall in Sugarland later this year. If so, you will see me there....again and again and again!
I love the place. Pizza by the slice and really good garlic bread. Only place I know that has a drive thru that does that. They used to be all over town in the late 80's. I believe they were originally owned by Ninfa's. EDIT: Just checked. Still owned by the Laurenzo family.
CiCi's makes me laugh. I used to LOVE going there in high school with my friends, stacking the plates high at the table. Went there with a group for the first time in well over a decade this past May.....and oh dear lord. It made me wish I could pay $25 and get real pizza. I don't think they even use real cheese anymore, just some sort of diary-esque spread. I'll also bring up Dominos, just because those losers lost my business for good a few weeks ago. I wanted to be nice to my coworkers and order up some for lunch, being it was 2-for-Tuesday. We operate with a fairly narrow window for lunch since we work on scheduled projects, so I ordered online (11:20 am) 40 mins before we were going to break. (You've got 30 mins!) The online window gives me a 37-47 min delivery estimate. 50 minutes later, I'm outside with a coworker and decide to call just to be sure the drivers on the way: -"Are you at X?" -Um...no....we're at Y -"Oh....you're Evan" -Yes -"Okay, well, you're next on his list" -Okay, so we'll see him in 5 mins? -"Well...he has to finish his drop, come back here [Rice Village Kirby location, we're in the Med Center], get the pizza, and get back out to you. -Wait....so it's going to be at least ANOTHER 20-30 minutes? -"Yes" -And the pizza came out of the oven almost a half hour ago? -"Yes" -And you expect me to still pay full price for that? -"Yes" I'll omit the colorful end to the conversation, but suffice to say I hung up and we went back into the office, given that everyone only had 45 mins or so left in the lunch break. Had I been at home, I'd have lived with it and just short-tipped the driver. But this taught me never to order from work again. Cook a pizza and get it to me an hour later? Screw that. That they didn't care at all about that atrocious delivery service spoke even greater volumes. A fun postlude to the story - the guy calls me back soon after. Tells me that due to my "comment" the order has been changed from delivery to pick up. I suggest that he make love to a fork. Evan
round table for sure they just dont have enough coupons around to make it a pizza i would have somewhat often. there are a few local places around here I do like though...i think d'amore is a local pizza chain they have great pizza but same deal as round table..a bit pricey. i dont get the love fest of papa john...maybe its the so cal area but every papa john's i've been to here has been mediocre at best...especially the one right by my apt.
I think it is because it is an alternative to the other 2 of the big 3 pizza chains. The toppings and cheese are different, the bread is more of a chewy, bready dough, and the sauce is sweeter.
The Rock wood wood fired pizza..... That's good ****. I live In Portland and hit it up every time I go to Seattle area. Round Table is good but it's pretty damn expensive for a chain....even with coupon As far as chains go of the big chains not local chains..... I'd have to agree that Papa Johns is the best. The Works dipped in garlic butter fat works for me.
I blame my wife for getting me burned out on Papa John's. We used to have one in the city I live in (not my original hometown but where I call home now)and it went under. Then about 2 years ago, Papa John's made a triumphant return. And that's all I heard whenever I wanted pizza: "Honey, can't we get pizza from Pizza Hut ONE TIME??" "Nope, too greasy - call Papa John's." I mean Papa John's isn't bad but I feel that Pizza Hut has so much more variety with their Wings street, the pasta, the calzones (piezones or whatever), the various specialty pizzas, lunch buffet, etc. Granted I have never eaten any of these other features they offer (I always get a meat lover's or the buffet) but they always look tempting. It is like I was telling someone the other day - Pizza Hut is becoming more and more like a regular restaurant and not some specialty place. I did vote Little Caesar's and would not change my vote but it may have been me caught up in the moment yesterday of eating their pizza for the first time, heh. But as ima said - there really isn't a thing as bad pizza - some places make it better than others. Oh and the person who said Mellow Mushroom (I think it was Deuce) - there is one in Murfreesboro and we almost ate at it yesterday but ultimately went to Little Caesar's. I then wikipediaed Mellow Mushroom and found that they have locations in many states but are definitely more of a regional thing. Can't believe I forgot about Mr. Gattis! I'll ask this to everyone - are there people who feel that DiGiornios (sp?) or any other home pizza (like Tombstone) is better than any pizza from a chain? I do like DiGiornios but I would be able to tell pretty quickly that it is a pizza that didn't come from a chain despite what their commercials lead you to believe.
Not me. Those frozen pizzas(tombstone, digiorno etc) are a last resort and they NEVER taste as good as a fresh pizza. You can tell quickly that it didn't come from a chain because it's been FROZEN! They are usually pretty expensive too... I'd rather pay a few extra bucks and have a fresh-er pizza.
