Elmer Strongtoe - Ye Hath Slain My Oysters (1996) Williams is the King followed by Horner who I think also did the Gladiator. Horner also wrote the original Star Trek theme for the TV Series.
Morricone is my favorite movie music composer too, though I like the soundtrack to "For a Few Dollars More" better than "The Good the Bad and the Ugly." '60 seconds to what?' and the main title theme are my favorites. http://www.clinteastwood.net/welcome.html is a great source for some of Morricone's music in RealAudio format. Conan the Barbarian and Waterworld had great soundtracks as well. On a side note, if you are a big fan of epic film music, you'd probably enjoy video game soundtrack arrangements too, since the genre is very similar. http://www.soundtrackcentral.com/ is a great source.
I forgot about Bernard Hermann. He also composed the "Taxi Driver" score and "Citizen Kane", two famous pieces in film score history.
Mrs JB actually beat me to it, but I love Thomas Newman. He is one of my favorites. His use of ethnic instruments and rhythms along with classical composition is truly innovative. He is the cousin of Randy Newman and comes from a movie composer family. His father, Alfred Newman, was a film composer in the 60's doing the music for films like How the West Was Won, Busstop, Seven Year Itch and others. His uncles are Lionel and Emil Newman. Lionel was the music supervisor on the first three Star Wars films and Raiders of the Lost Ark. Emil did literally dozens of films in the 40's and 50's. His most famous was the 1962 version of Beauty and the Beast. I like Elfman, John Williams and others, but I really like the film scoring of Stewart Copeland, the former Police drummer. He scored movies like She's All That, Wide Sargasso Sea, Highlander II and Wall Street plus a BUNCH of indie films and music for TV shows like the Equalizer and Babylon 5. Another guy I like a lot is David Arnold. He did the music for films like Changing Lanes, Zoolander, Godzilla (1998), The World is Not Enough, Tomorrow Never Dies and, my favorite of his, Stargate. I actually own that soundtrack and I don't usually buy them.
Balkes...you should download Jakatta's "American Dream" - cool trance remix of the theme song to American Beauty. Danny Elfman was the lead singer of Oingo Boingo..."Dead Man's Party" is a great album.
