hmmm, and I always thought they were simple, not bad, but simple. imo, El Paraiso owns the Mexico City street-vendor category for enchiladas. As for prettier and "classy" enchiladas, man, they are too numerous to name. What I'd like to know is where can we get New Mexico-style enchiladas . . . they have a different class of sauces than Texas. Yummy Ancho sauces to begin with.
Ooops, my bad HayesStreet. subtomic has the right place. (Too many damn restaurants in this town, I'm gettin' confused! ) Another place worth trying is Jalapeno's on Kirby. Good food, good prices, nice atmosphere.
Maybe you're right JZ, but i still think it's more like southwest-nuevo-mexican. here's a link to a partial menu these aren't very mexican... what do y'all think? -Cucumber Pico de Gallo -Sweet Potato & Swiss Chard with Guajillo Chile Sauce Enchiladas -Spicy Caesar Salad ~ Romaine Lettuce with Chipotle Spiked Caesar Dressing Topped with Crispy Tortilla Strips & Cotija Cheese I really prefer Tex-Mex to real interior Mexican food... I don't care for mole' but gimme some yellow cheese red sauce enchilada's anyday over sweet potato and chard enchilada's!! rH --
I hear the service at LT's sucks and the management knows it...it's like they want it that way! There's some sign outside the front door that basically states "our service sucks and we know it, if you want to eat here, deal with it" NOT in those words, but along those lines. I can't patronize a place like that. However, I do hear it's kid friendly?! rH
Pappasitos' has always been a favorite of mine. They have the BEST seafood enchiladas, mmmmm. A place nobody has heard of its probably Fajitas that is located by Greenspoint mall on I-45 north. They have the BEST fajitas I have ever had PERIOD. Tortuga has great mexican food that can make up a meal in a few mins and are pretty cheap also. Taco Cabana has been a favorite of mine if you want quality fast mexican food. Another place everybody should check out is Freebirds (next to Amy's Ice Cream) on S Sheppard. They serve stuff burritos like Atomic Burrito. Its pretty damn big too and you get your moneys worth. Taco bell is probably the worst place to go. I SWEAR they stuff their food with so much vegetables that it pisses me off. I ordered a stuff burrito last week and the top half of the burrito was all beans, while the rest of it was on the bottem.
Lupe Tortillas in Clear Lake has bad service. I've been there twice (the second was to give them another chance and they blew it) and I'll probably not go back. Their food is average and their wait staff is as slow as the post office. I didn't care much that the men's restroom was situated in the kitchen staging area. I've went to the Blue Agave once for a Sunday brunch and really enjoyed it, but I'm not sure how the regular menu tastes. I've been to Molinas a few times and really like their food.
HayesStreet is definitely thinking of La Jaliscience. (hopefully I spelled it right... Rice students used to call it "Burrito Hell") Anyway, that is some good stuff. I can't find any restaurant here in Austin that can make Mexican (or Tex-Mex) food nearly so well. The best we have in Austin is Chuy's, which isn't bad, though sometimes you wish you had some other good choices. Chuy's is as close as you can get to New Mexico influence here... at least they know how to cook with chiles. Still, drive west for long enough and you know you're getting into really good eating territory when they start asking you "red or green?" for everything and it comes with two cheeses on it. This starts around Fort Stockton and continues further west. Back to Houston... we like Monterey's Little Mexico, and there's some interesting stuff (like queso fresco enchiladas) at the Goode Company Taqueria. For large burritos: Freebirds is OK... but I just had a delicious one from Chipotle. They put this awesome spicy chicken in it. Though, for those who like steak burritos, Freebirds does that better. Both places have a similar concept, but different flavors. Fast food: Taco Cabana is great. Get the fajita tacos. Don't get me started on Taco Bell. It doesn't belong with "Mexican" food, but with dog food. (why do you think that little dog liked to eat it so much?) It IS cheap, though. Sometimes that can be very important. mmmmm, Mexican.... (and when I complain about gaining weight, I have no one to blame but myself)
Sorry, The Blue Agave no longer exists. It's now The World Cafe. I had brunch at the Blue Agave once, really enjoyed it. The only complaint was the buffet line was very poorly lit. I could barely see what I was putting on my plate. Burritos in Houston - I think Mission Burrito is less expensive and better than Freebirds. But ya can't beat the burrito's from La Mex, El Rey and La Jaliscience, big as yo face and cheap! rH
I like a whole bunch of Houston's Mexican's restaurants, but Chuys is the one I like the most. In fact, I was there just Saturday after Lufkin High School's win over Austin Westlake.
I'm not sure how similar the Taquieras in Houston are to the one here in Orlando, but I love the huge 3lb burritos and free chips that I can get at the one here. At the very least, good basic Mexican food 9though I've never tried the rest). Definately better than Taco Bell.
Anybody ever eat at Ruchi's Taqueria at Richmond and Kirby. Really good and cheap. The salsa is almost too hot for this gringo. The cool thing is they have tacos with sesos, which is cow brain. I've never dared to try them, though. Speaking of the Blue Agave, on Valentine's Day two years ago, I went there with a group of friends for dinner, during which I had two margaritas. From there we went to the Satellite Lounge where I had four martinis. Needless to say, those enchiladas later refused to stay down.
The Caeser salad was invented in Mexico! And the rest sound traditional Mexican to me Regardless, I find it quite tasty. Although TexMex cheese, sour cream, red sauce and crap is real real good to!
Its not exactly Mexican per-se.... more South American with a southwestern flair to it. Some of the best food I have EVER put in my mouth at a great price. The decor is crummy and its in a strip mall but this place flat out has some of the best Mexican/South American food I have tasted in Houston: The Red Onion (used to be off of 290 just North of 610. I think they moved into a new location.) Anyone ever heard or been??
Hey JZ, let's just agree to disagree... I think Taco Milagro sucks and you think it rocks. The Caesar salad was invented in Mexico?? C'mon. I need some proof, a link or something.... rH
That's my hood by The Deerbrook Mall south of Kingwood. Never been there but heard good things. My Favorite is Cinco De Mayo I-45 North @ Louetta - its actually on Holzwarth road, behind the old Goodyear Air Blimp base. By the Loews movie theatre. Anyone eat there? Hot Salsa and Cold Margaritas. Very Cute hostess also.
