Inspired by the favorite history books thread, I wanted to include one for my favorite Literary genres: Will start with these 5 favorites - 5 - Texas, James Michner 4 - Undaunted Courage, Stephen Ambrose 3 - Julian, Gore Vidal 2 - I Claudius, Robert Graves 1 - Aztec, Garry Jennings
Again, too many to name so a few random ones: My Name Is Red - Pamuk Pillars of the Earth - Follett The Historian - Kostova Green Darkness - Seton
The Matthew Corbett novels by Robert McCammon. All about a young magistrate's clerk in colonial America who continues to find trouble throughout the series. Speaks the Nightbird is the first, but this is my favorite: Lots of books by Bernard Cornwell and they are almost all good, though the Sharpe series seems a little ragged after the first 4 or 5. By far my favorite is Agincourt, which goes into great details about how the battle was won by the Brits. Thermopylae. Need any more be said? This is a very good novel of that battle that covers so much more ground. The author, Stephen Pressfield, has also written a number of other books, including one on Alexander's campaign in Afghanistan. This one however, also has the distinction of being on many military and Fire leadership reading lists. Bruce Alexander's Sir John Fielding mysteries are based on a real guy by that name who was blind magistrate in London and essentially started the first police force in the city. The stories are told through an orphan that appears before Sir John's court who is hired by Fielding to be his eyes on important cases. These are fun books. Here is the first: Really great fictionalized biography of Tecumseh. A good read. Story about a Hitler Youth member during the fall of the Reich as allied forces close in on Berlin from all sides. Based on the author's true experiences, a study in the crushing moral choices war demands of people.
great thread guys!! Shogun by Clavell was my very first one and still has a special place in my heart. I also enjoyed Trinity and Redemption by Leon Uris. Those books were amazing!
Have not read Quicksilver, but Cryptonomicon is almost perfect.. Started me on a long Neal Stephenson jag. If anyone was ever too clever for his own good...
Thanks, Buck... i know the story is not fiction, just thought the book was thought to be historical fiction.
This is more historical/fantasy fiction but i recommend anyone reading the Tremeraire series by Naomi Novik if you are interested in the war between England and France or naval fiction (but with dragons as sort of a navy air-force). https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/28876.His_Majesty_s_Dragon - 4/5 rating
