I bought Opeths DVD because Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree) produced it and it showed him in the studio. I loved the mellow music of Opeth....I tried listening to the harder stuff, but I couldnt take it. Im getting old I guess. Good band!
Queensryche Metallica (of the 80's, I don't really know their 90's stuff past Black) Anthrax Judas Priest Motley Crue (just because early-to-mid 80's I loved them)
Yeah, steven wilson did alot of backup vocals on the Damnation album, as well as all of the keyboarding. As opposed to some of their other works, damnation was complete different with more of a 70s prog rock sound. I love the mellow sound as well. You dont get that with regularity on some of their other albums that are made up mostly of gutteral death metal blasts or bardic songs.
Nobody mentioned Iced Earth, American Iron Maiden-esque band with a kick ass new album, Glorious Burden. Deep Purple? Otep? Oh, and thank you all for not mentioning Slipknot...
GNR Queensryche Metallica Pantera AC/DC Van Halen Skid Row Saigon Kick Whitesnake The Cult Def Leppard
Good Charlotte A Simple Plan Yellowcard Hoobastank Cold Flickerstick Strangelight But seriously.... Ozzy with his original band (Randy Rhodes, Tommy Aldridge, Rudy Sarzo) Diary and Blizzard are two of the best metal albums ever IMO. My favorite "Hard Rock/Heavy Metal" bands, in no particular order • KISS • Godsmack • Tool • Disturbed • Metallica • Guns N Roses • AC/DC • Anthrax • AudioSlave • Danzig • Fastway • Megadeth • Motley Crue • Pantera • Skid Row • UNION • Van Halen • WASP That's a pretty decent starter list.
Wow, I thought there would be more of Yngwie listed, but I guess not. I just recently re-hashed the past and bought an Yngwie Malmsteen cd. ......anyways iron maiden Queensryche Yngwie Malmsteen White Zombie Pantera Type-0-Negative
People have mentioned Jethro Tull (??), Deep Purple, and Led Zeppelin as heavy metal bands. Say they were an inspiration, sure, but "heavy metal" was an outgrowth of those and many other great bands of the '60's and early, mid-'70's. Just my opinion, of course.
Van Halen Def Leppard Motley Crue Scorpians Rush <- even after the Rush-hating thread I started Does Queen count? Boston
