Just moved back in mid-December. My favorites: Zimms - I know the bartender and can get free drinks usually. Plus there are lots of hot ladies, and I never leave there without 1 phone number . It gets pretty crowded on the weekends which can get annoying. Davenport - Nice interior, but WAY too crowded (small), and good luck getting a drink!! Sambuca (downtown) - Cool place to start off the night, watch some jazz, and chill Rudyards - Great place all around. The music upstairs was pretty weird even for my indie tastes. The band was nothing more than loud thrashing noise..... Volcano - Tried this place out last Friday. Not too crowded, cool vibe, and nice drink array. Reminded me of Oceans 11 in Austin. Sherlocks - Am I in college again because this shure feels like it. Lame cover band played on Saturday night......
Forgot about the Volcano, good bar. It can get really crowded on occasion though, I guess just like anyplace else.
M Bar - rip off. Bartenders there charge diff. prices for same drink! Door guys are assholes. Basically, just Prague w/ white curtains. Social - used to have a good crowd. Lately it's been roid ragers & their late 30's stripper girls. Getting bad. 511 - upstairs is good later in the night. Zimm's fun but getting wayyyyyyyyyy too crowded. The place is small to begin with. Good luck getting a drink here in under 10 minutes. Stuka - new bar. English style dark, rock, good drink & cheap, on Tuam & Bagby near where Club Sum used to be. LZ's - like the place but it's like high school/frat reunion on Thursdays & Fridays Barfly - fun, but again too many drunken frat types starting fights. Giving bar a bad name. Seven - pretty cool, but in the last month the Roxy crowd has invaded the place on weekends. Check out Rock night on Wednesdays. I haven't set foot on the Richmond strip in 2 years. I got tired of the trash crowd, fights, shootings, stabbings, hookers, etc. that have taken over that area. Richmond has gone to crap.
I went some place last time I was in town that was pretty decent. Of course, I was trashed when we got there...I think it's called Cotton Exchange, or something like that. It's downtown.
i haven't been to Red Cat Jazz Cafe yet....anyone else been there? my wife and i have talked about going there, but we usually end up at Sambuca when we go out like that... of course, finding a sitter is not always the easiest of tasks...so a lot of times we use our dates as chances to catch up on movies
Max, you want a REAL jazz bar, try Cezanne's. On Montrose next to the Black Lab. That or just take your wife to Marfreless on West Gray & make out. It's the place across from Sherlock's - no sign, just a door in a wall. Make sure that any of you who do go to Marfreless take a woman though - nothing they hate more than having a bunch of dudes show up and stand there gawking at all the people making out, and uhh, more...
