Dean -- I was the biggest Metallica fan you'd find in '91. I saw them play in the Summit for 3 hours with no opening act (I missed one of my varsity basketball games my senior year to go to the concert! Hey, you have to have your priorities straight...). It was an amazing experience. But now, they're just so mainstream, it's just not fun anymore. As for Rage, I have their first album, and it's cool.....I just have this aversion to mainstream music, I guess. It's probably not fair, but I hate radio, and I have no choice. [IMG]

I like a lot of types of music. The things I won't (and never have) listen to are: Country, Teeny bopper girl groups (from Britney Spears to Debbie Gibson), and "Boy Bands".

    Top 6 Favorites:
Aerosmith, Jethro Tull, The Doors, Whitesnake, Guns 'n Roses ("A.F.D", and "Lies" only), Steppenwolf, & Creedence Clearwater Revival

    Other favorites:
ROCK - AC/DC, Metallica (pre-A.J.F.A), ZZ Top (old stuff kicks ass), Stevie Ray Vaughn, Nirvana, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Allman Brothers, The Eagles, Skid Row, Queen, Steely Dan, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Prince, The Beatles, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis, ....

OTHER - Sade, En Vogue, Luther Vandross, Erykah Badu, N.W.A, Run DMC (80s), Eurythmics, Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston, TLC, The Police, George Michael, Michael Jackson (older stuff), ....

There's a blues guitarist/singer who's name I can't think of. I think it's Johnny "something". But, I saw him on a PBS special one night, and thought he was awesome. I didn't know one of his songs, but I didn't change the channel until the show went off, and I was pissed when it did.

Newer (notice new-er) bands I can stand to listen to:
    Blink 182, Everclear, Q-Tip, .... still thinking

Get the f*ck out of here!!!!!!! Man, I need to get a copy of that ASA-freakin'-P. I LOVE Dennis Chambers. He rules!!!

Sorry for the profanity. That just sounds awesome.

Doesn't Will Lee play bass on Heavy Metal Be Bop or is it Neil Jason? Who's playin' bass on Live in Spain?

DREAMer, You're probably thinking of Johnny Lang. He's awesome. Especially for his age.

Wow!! Who are all these bands. Half of these I havent even heard of. The only oldies band which is in my top ten would have to be Creedence Clearwater Revival. They absolutely rule!!!

Outlaw- your right. Scott Stapp is something of an egomaniac.

I kinda surprised no one said Limp Bizkit of Korn. Those are some popular sorry bands.

On a different note... what did yall think of those VH-1 best rock bands of all time. were those accurate???

The next time I have meat and mashed potatoes, I think I'll put a very large blob of potatoes on my plate with just a little piece of meat. And if someone asks me why i didn't get more meat, ill just say, "Oh, you mean this?" and pull out a big piece of meat from inside the blob of potatoes, where ive hidden it. Good magic trick, huh?

Dennis Chambers is amazing. As a drummer, man, after listening to him, I don't know whether to go practice or just cry. One tenor sax grad student here won't call him "Dennis Chambers". It's "Dennis Mr. God Chambers".

If you want to hear an example of the album, and you have Napster, look up "Brecker Brothers Some Skunk Funk". It's 6:55 long. I know the video is available through Jamey Abdersold productions.

As for bass player, I don't know. The few times I've listened to it, I was too much in shock to catch everyone's names. I'll try to ask my friend tomorrow that has the CD, when I'm ordering him to burn me a copy. [IMG] On Heavy Metal Be Bop, I think it's Neil Jason. I know it's not Lee (see discography below), and CDNOW.com didn't say.

By the way, speaking of Will Lee (amazing bass player), have you any idea how many albums he's been on?!?!? It's mind boggling.

Jeff, also, you might want to check into a band called either Steps or Steps Ahead (if you haven't already).

"Originally called Steps when it was formed in 1979 by vibraphonist Mike Mainieri, this group at various times has included tenor saxophonist Michael Brecker, keyboardists Don Grolnick, Eliane Elias and Rachel Z, guitarist Mike Stern, bassists Eddie Gomez and Darryl Jones and drummers Peter Erskine and Steve Smith among others." -- CDNow.com

Wow, so many bands -- and I'm just a nineties kinda guy! Oh well, here I go:

Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, The Jerry Cantrell Band, Pearl Jam, Mudhoney, Temple of the Dog, Stone Temple Pilots, Tool, Metallica (all of it), Foo Fighters, Nirvana, Sevendust, Incubus, Living Colour, ad infinitum....

I'm kinda diggin' some of the new school rock, too. A Perfect Circle and Nickelback are both Stone Cold approved.

    Creed, however, can go burn.

I know all about Steps Ahead. They are amazing. I love Darryl Jones. The first time I saw bring on the night, I was hooked. Then, I heard the stuff he did with Miles. One of the coolest records he did was John Scofield's "Still Warm" which also had Omar Hakim on drums. Just killer.

Will Lee has been on a bazillion albums. Ironically, he's been on more recordings as a singer than he has as a bassist because of all the jingles he's done.

We probably listen to much the same kind of stuff. Being a bass player for the past 17 years will do that to ya'! [IMG]

Drop me an email sometime and we'll discuss the music thang.

Guster's AWESOME. Love their sound. They opened for Dave a couple of times I think. I like their: I Spy, Center of Attention, and Airport a lot. They also do a lot of cool remixes too..

Here's what I'm listening to at the moment:

DMB, Coldplay, Lifehouse, Nelly Furtado, U2.

    Jeff,

I have been looking for that album forever since I saw an interview with Holdsworth where he raves about it. Lane mentioned to me that this was a must as well. Can this still be purchased? Just curious....

Anything rock-n-roll is fine by me. I grew up on ZZ Top, Aerosmith, Boston, Pink Floyd, and The Who.

Modern bands I enjoy include Creed, Lit, Toadies, and, believe it or not, I like Limp Biskit as well. Don't ask me why. [IMG]

Jeff, definately I'll drop you a line when I get a chance. That's a great thing about coming to a jazz college, is you learn about so many more people. The town I came from could usually name two jazz artists, Kenny G and Miles Davis, IN THAT ORDER! Ugh.

I just found out about Steps Ahead less than a week ago. Gotta do some listening there. :)

Stringthing, I've seen the album in stores. If worse comes to worst you could always buy it online. I know CDNow.com has it.
