It is getting close to the end of the year and wanted to see what people felt were the best albums that came out in 2005 (you can use late 2004 if you would like). My top 5: 1 - "Silent Alarm" by Bloc Party - unbelievable album that truly gets better after each listen; reminds me a lot of an upbeat Interpol. Favorite tracks are "Pioneers" and "Positive Tension". 2 - "Takk.." by Sigur Ros - you know it takes a special album to keep the best band out of Iceland from my top spot! Another great album by Jonsi and company; also gets better after each listen. Favorite track is "Saeglopur" 3 - "Guero" by Beck - Beck drops the sadsack persona and goes back to his wild and partying ways! Very similar to "Odelay!"; I was really grooving to this album but it sorta wore out on me - nonetheless it is still very good. Favorite track is "E-Pro". 4 - "X&Y" by Coldplay - it could be considered not to be "cool" anymore to say you like this band, but who the f$ck cares? Not as good as their first 2 albums mainly because after song #7 ("Speed of Sound"), the album goes a little bland. However the songs before that one (and including that one) are very strong. Favorite track is "Talk" (great Kraftwerk interpolation). 5 - "Get Behind Me Satan" by The White Stripes - highly eclectic album by the Detroit rockers; not as good as "Elephant" but this album has its moments. Favorite track is "My Doorbell". Biggest disappointment for me was "Hotel" by Moby. I have a bad feeling that he has peaked with "Play".
Didn't Eminem warn you years ago? "Nobody listens to techno..." My favorite album: Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith - The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack w/bonus dvd
"I know your gay because you listen to Coldplay"-40 year old virgin. j/k yea it was a great album I also agree with Damian Marley- Welcome to Jamrock Green Day - American Idiot How about some hiphop/rap??? Kanye West - Late Registration Black Eyed Peas - Monkey Business Mariah Carey - Emancipation of Mimi Slim Thug - Already Platinum Mike Jones - Who is Mike Jones? Paul Wall - The Peoples Champ David Banner - Certified Any DJ Smallz Southern Smoke Mixed Tape Teriyaki Boyz - Beef or Chicken (Think Japanese Beastie Boys)
I agree with Manny. Bloc Party, Coldplay and Sigur Ros all had great albums this year. I would add: Franz Ferdinand- You could have it so much better with FF Death Cab for Cutie- Plans The Bravery- self titled My Morning Jacket-Z Damian Marley- Welcome to Jamrock Acceptance- Phantoms Alkaline Trio- Crimson Doves- Some Cities Aqualung- Strange and Beautiful
The Darkness - One Way Ticket to Hell...and Back - this album blows away their first one, I don't think it has left my car cd player since I got it. Clap Your Hands, Say Yeah - Self Titled. - not a great album, but it's worth a listen or two. If you are ok with the singer's voice, the album will grow on you. EDIT: I thought about starting a thread about the new Darkness album, but I figure it can be discussed here now. Has anyone else heard this album? I think it's killer. I don't think it will bring in any new fans, but if you already like the band you have to really love this new one. Thoughts.....?
cool thread! ive actually made a personal top 10 list the past few years. its always nice to be able to go back 5 or 10 years and see what you were listening to at the time. this thread gave me a good oportunity to go ahead and put mine together a little early so here goes... 1) sufjan stevens - come on feel the illinoise! indie rocking banjo player. think iron and wine w/ flaming lips as the backing band. orchestral indie pop. he has committed to doing an album dedicated to each of our 50 states. first one was michigan and illinois is the second. songs about al capone, very spooky one about john wayne gacy, mary todd lincoln. great narrative songwriter! 2) white stripes - get behind me satan. never liked white stripes till i heard this record. fans of the rolling stones beggar's banquet should check this out. its got that acoustic based country/blues thing down and great songs to boot! despite the fact that there are probably only 3 or 4 songs w/ electric guitar, this album rocks. 3) r. kelly - tp3: reloaded. if you are a recording enthusiast/producer you should give this a listen. when i play it for people, the first thing that say is invariably "man, this production is sooo clean". the weatherman makes a return to his nasty self w/ gems like "sex weed", "sex in the kitchen" and the shakespearian masterpiece "trapped in the closet". 4) oneida - the wedding - new york noise rock ala velvet underground/sonic youth. i really cant describe these guys other than to say they are AWESOME! 5) my morning jacket - z - neil young backed by radiohead. 6)opeth - ghost reveries - METAL. these guys are often described as the pink floyd of metal (manny?). they are from sweeden and do the whole black metal thing pretty good, they have alot of tool to them as well. singer reminds me alot of maynard. they also incorporate alot of really nice floydian jams in there as well. im actually going to be seeing these guys in munich, germany in a couple weeks. in fact, i leave for amsterdam tomorrow. 7)jagga jazzist - what we must 8)fiona apple - extraordinary machine - never was a fan till i heard this. very beatles-esque. 9)danger doom - the mouse and the mask 10)paul wall - peoples champ - H TOWN!
These guys are hardworkers, come out with an album or two every year it seems. Haven't had a chance to check this one out. I loved Blackwater Park from a couple years ago, great death metal album. They have the unique ability to reinvent themselves every time they record something. Damnation blew my mind. It's not just a great metal album, its a great album regardless of genre. Seventies inspired prog rock album, oh those sweet melodies, and the dreamy, ethereal vocals, and the sheer melancholy of the whole album. darnit, where did i put that cd.
I am not sure if this was this year but "Hot Fuss" by the Killers is amazing! And With Teeth by NIN And Hypnotize/Mesmorize System of a Down
Explosions in the Sky - The Rescue EP Boards of Canada - The Campfire Headphase Sam Prekop - Who's Your New Professor? 13 and God - s/t Sigur Ros - Takk The National - Alligator Broadcast - Tender Buttons Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! - s/t Low - The Great Destroyer Pelican - The Fire in Our Throats will Beckon the Thaw Mogwai - Government Commissions: BBC Sessions 1996-2003 Prefuse 73 - Surrounded by Silence Autechre - Untilted
I don't think it was the best year for music, but these are the top one's I can think of that I own as of now. 1. Bloc Party (Silent Alarm) 2. Kanye West (Late Registration) 3. Sigur Ros (Takk...) 4. White Stripes (Get behind me satan) 5. New Pornographers (Twin Cinema) 6. Wolf Parade (Apologies to the Queen Mary) 7. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah (self-titled) 8. My Morning Jacket (Z) 9. Decemberists (Picaresque) 10. System of a Down (Mesmerize/Hypnotize) If only their lyrics were better 11. Spoon (Gimme Fiction) 12. Sleater-Kinney (The Woods) 13. Dangerdoom (The Mouse and The Mask) 14. Franz Ferdinand (You Could Have it so Much Better) 15. Fiona Apple (Extraordinary Machine) prefer Jon Brion version but this one is okay
Hip Hop disappointed me greatly this year, I couldn't even find an album to jam that didn't bore me after 2-3 listens. My List... 1.) Avenged Sevenfold - City Of Evil Quite frankly, this is the best album i have ever heard. Every track is gold. If you've heard "Bat Country" you'll know what I'm talking about. The vocals are a little off at times, but the guitar work blows you the **** away. Really who does guitar solos anymore anyway? This is one of those albums that pays homage to the old stuff like G-n-R, Metallica, Iron Maiden and Pantera, but also creates its own style, they do everything, ballads, orchestral interludes, piano. 2.) Disturbed - stricken 3.) System of a Down - mezmerize 4.) James Blunt - back to bedlam 5.) Danger Doom - the mouse and the mask 6.) Gorillaz - demon days 7.) Franz Ferdinand - you could have had it so much better 8.) Kanye West - late registration
Baikonour - For The Lonely Hearts Of The Cosmos World Psychedelic Classics 3: Love's a Real Thing Paul Anka - Rock Swings (Eyes Without a Face rules)
1) Avenged Sevenfold-City of Evil 2) Kanye West-Late Registration 3) Franz Ferdinand-You Could Have Had It So Much Better
Whoa, I was just reading something about Opeth and decided to check them out, then I come across this. weeeeird.
