Today is the deadline to declare keepers and start selecting draft order.

Step 1: Post the 4 players you intend to keep here in this thread. Don't bother doing anything on the league website -- I will take care of that afterwards. Please note that if your keepers have not been declared by midnight tonight BBS time, then I will pick them for you myself based on who I consider to be your best 4 players.

Step 2: After everyone's keepers have been declared, then we will start selecting the draft order. This will be done in order according to overall points acquired last season. Here is the draft order selection list:

    1. hotballa - 6575
    2. mogrod - 6687
    3. LongHornFan - 6862
    4. Rocketball - 7128
    5. PhiSlammaJamma - 7186
    6. SmeggySmeg - 7208
    7. fadeaway - 7245
    8. DarkHorse - 7433
    9. chrisjent - 7455
    10. SamCassell - 7145 (Last year's champ)

Make sure to keep checking this thread for when it is your turn to choose. The only one who doesn't have to worry about this part is SamCassell because last year's champion will always get whatever spot is left over at the end.

Please note that this is not the actual draft - that will start on March 2nd - this is simply the selection process to determine the draft order.

Again, thanks for allowing me join y'all's league. Looking forward to a fun season. The Stinky Punks are back in business.

    My keepers:

    - Miguel Cabrera
    - Jimmy Rollins
    - Curtis Granderson
    - Roy Oswalt

Also, I'm not following you on the draft order selection. The draft just doesn't automatically go from worst to first based on last year?

Right, you get to select your spot. The reason being that, depending on the draft pool, the early spots might not always be the best places to pick from, and I want the worst teams to get the best chances to improve.

Smeg and hotballa emailed me their keepers. Hotballa was banned from the board.

Smeg: Jake Peavy, Josh Beckett, Grady Sizemore, Matt Holliday
hotballa: Eric Bedard, Cole Hamels, Jose Reyes, Lance Berkman

Still waiting to hear from chrisjent, DarkHorse and Rocketball. I guess I'll give them an extension to get theirs in as I didn't expect so many teams to not make their picks.

Dunno. He said he doesn't know why.

Anyway, I think we have a good enough idea of the talent pool now, so we might as well start picking the draft order. I already talked with hotballa, and interestingly enough, he wants slot #10.

mogrod is next up to choose...

    Selection Order

    1. hotballa - 6575 (#10)
    2. mogrod - 6687
    3. LongHornFan - 6862
    4. Rocketball - 7128
    5. PhiSlammaJamma - 7186
    6. SmeggySmeg - 7208
    7. fadeaway - 7245
    8. DarkHorse - 7433
    9. chrisjent - 7455
    10. SamCassell - 7145

OK, I think I'm still missing something on this draft selection, especially after hotball's selection.

Can someone tell me what advantage there is to be lower in the order. I mean, if I select to be first, wouldn't that pretty much guarantee me getting the best available player? Is this a typical draft or is it an auction draft or something?

I hate coming off as a complete dumb*** but I'm not following someone WANTING to draft later.

Some people (myself included) value the two consecutive picks (10th & 11th) that you get by picking last over the 1st and 20th pick.

Depending on who is going to be available it's worth thinking about.

It's all about how you like to draft, and I think letting people pick their spot is a great idea.

I've had the #1 and #2 pick before and not been happy about it.

    :)

This is a typical snake draft.

DarkHorse explained it pretty well. For example, if you see that there is a group of 12 or so players who are all of the same quality, and then a big drop off after that, then it might be advantageous to have a low pick because then you get two of the players in that group. If you were at the top of the order, you would only get one of these guys and then would have to choose your next pick from a lesser tier of players.

It all depends on how you perceive the available talent pool. If you think that there is one available player who is clearly better than everyone else, then you should select a spot high in the order. If you think there is a cluster of players who are pretty much the same, then a lower spot might be the way to go.

Forget all the strategic arguments about depth of talent pool vs. best available etc... I was hoping to pick 10th just so that I could cut in half the amount of time I had to spend checking the draft board over and over before I went to bed so that I don't get skipped for getting my 8 hours sleep (and/or cut in half the number of lists I had to send to people for the same reason, especially since I prefer to pick myself rather than by list).

    Ah, thanks for the explanation.

I thought about all of that, but I guess I thought maybe there was more to it. This is the first time I've seen this type of thing so it kind of just shocked me into over -thinking it. LOL!!

Anyway, I guess I'll take just take #5.
