So, our top two keepers can only be kept for the 2010 and 2011 seasons then you must trade them?

LH, I just looked at your sig... How can you be the "reigning 2008 baseball champion" when I won last season, and now it's 2010?

Here's a sample timeline using your players with March 1st as the key date (approx. 2 weeks before the draft and keeper declaration day). Hopefully this will clear things up for you.

March 1, 2010 (approx. current situation)
    Albert Pujols-1
    Roy Halladay-1
    Justin Morneau-1
    Brandon Phillips-1
    Aramis Ramirez-1
    Vladimir Guerrerro-1

Let's assume you make no deals throughout the 2010 season:

    March 1, 2011
    Albert Pujols-2
    Roy Halladay-2
    Justin Morneau-2
    Brandon Phillips-2
    Aramis Ramirez-2
    Vladimir Guerrerro-2

Two of these players must now be traded or released. Let's assume you trade Aramis Ramirez for Aaron Hill and release Vladimir Guerrero, keeping Alex Rios (who you drafted in 2010) instead.

    March 1, 2012
    Albert Pujols-3
    Roy Halladay-3
    Justin Morneau-3
    Brandon Phillips-3
    Aaron Hill-1
    Alex Rios-1

Only two of the players with 3 years can be kept at this point. Let's assume you do a package deal sending Morneau and Phillips for Jake Peavy and Johan Santana.

    March 1, 2013
    Albert Pujols-4
    Roy Halladay-4
    Aaron Hill-2
    Alex Rios-2
    Jake Peavy-1
    Johan Santana-1

Pujols and Halladay have already been kept 4 times, so you must now bite the bullet and trade them or release them in the draft pool.

What was the trade? I can't seem to log onto the draft site for some reason.

I sent him Carl Crawford and my 15th round pick and received Dice-K (aka crapola) and his 10th round pick.

PSJ raised a point over e-mail that one of the main attractions of a keeper format to him is being able to hold onto his favorite player (Lincecum) throughout his career. Maybe a way to do that is to add an extra keeper slot (bringing it up to 7) and have the extra guy able to be kept indefinitely. That way, all the trading incentives are still in place, but you don't have to worry about losing that one special guy you may have an emotional attachment to.

Anyway, we'll talk about that after this season, since we already decided to keep 6 going into this year.

If you are thinking of doing that, which is actually a good idea, I really like it, because it satisfies everyone. It will allow for more trading, while allowing you to hold onto a special/franchise player more long term. However, if we decide to go that way we should go ahead and implement this year - as nothing really is concrete or started as of yet.

We need to have everything set up and try not to change it each year, I love what you have done, but PSJ has a good point. So everyone should have their 6 keepers for the league and 1 franchise guy, but if you franchise someone, you should not be able to replace him (franchise someone else) for X (5 or so) years. That way if PSJ franchises Lincecum and he loses his arm he can't replace him for 5 years.

Also, if you don't want to franchise any of your players (no one worth it), you don't necessarily have to, the last round of the draft would be there for those who don't to pick up an equal number of players....

Interesting and good idea, and I agree with Rook. If we're gonna implement this we should maybe start it this year.

I'm with fade. The buildup to this season began last season. Such is the way with a keeper league. I'm not down with changing this season's rules a day before the draft. Especially when it comes to # of keepers. If we want 7 keepers or 8 keepers or whatever in the future, great, but let's leave this season alone.

Otherwise, why not just skip the draft and keep the rosters intact from last year? We could keep all our players as perma-keepers.

That doesn't make a lot of sense, the draft hasn't started- just a day or two ago we settled on this new keeper format (we did not have that last year), so make a tweak prior to starting the season is not much of a difference. What I don't want to see is every season change the rules, the number of keepers, and so on - let's get it set up the best way, set it up right and let it go, don't adjust the keeper thing every year. I really like what PSJ proposed and in my opinion, you don't want to franchise anyone you don't need to.

If were in the middle of the draft or season, I would be with you, but this is the time if you want to make changes (such as this new keeper format) you do it now.........

The last line reminded me of my wife, if you can't make a good argument, just go completely overboard with your analogy/statement....... :p

So, the draft starts tomorrow and we still don't have a draft order established or a list of keepers from everyone? Should we just go ahead and post them in this thread now?

BTW- Sent you the fee today, Fade.

You've overlooked the obvious point - we agreed last season, a long time ago, to have 6 keepers this year. Now, you are proposing adding a 7th.

We didn't do keepers at all until announcing it the previous season, and didn't change from 4 to 6 until announcing it last season. We can't change from 6 to 7 without a similar notice.

My point is, really I could care either way, we need to finalize the rules and not change them right before each season. So if that means making adjustments now, before everything gets started, then I am all for it...........At the end, you want everyone to enjoy it and have input on the structure, in the end it is a game and want to make it fun.

I think PSJ had a neat little twist to it (by allowing a franchise player), and I adjusted it some to make it have value and something you don't have to necessarily execute this season - instead you would get an additional draft pick and save it for upcoming years. Because once you use it, your locked in for X amount of years before being able to choose a different franchise player. So in theory you can roll into this season with 6 keepers, since it would be impossible for you to adjust - love giving you a hard time, had to throw in a jab.

In the end Fade can make a decision on it, I was just giving suggestions on how it can work.........

Bottom line, I want us to decide now the keeper rules and quit changing them (scoring rules, line-up rules, ect. is a different story), so if we don't want to use a franchise tag on a player then let's just keep the way Fade has it set up moving forward.
